The historic center of Tángel is classified as a locally significant cultural asset and a traditional historic center with comprehensive protection. Along the main road, it has a linear structure of two- and three-story terraced houses; the church and town hall are located at a small widening.

History

The settlement of Tángel developed spontaneously along the route between San Juan and Villafranqueza. Its development followed the irrigation networks and the boundary between irrigated and dry farmland. Tángel lies in a traditional Huerta zone with an extensive irrigation network. In Tángel, the historic settlement structure and the agricultural landscape can therefore be considered as two distinct perspectives alongside each other.

Culture

The Iglesia de la Trinidad features frescoes and ornamental decoration reminiscent of Byzantine art, which developed in Ravenna from the 5th century onward. Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes is designated as the parish church of Tángel; in summer, a service is held there on Sundays at 11:30 a.m.

The Finca El Pelegrí comprises two houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. It formerly included two houses with a wine cellar, chapel, two cisterns and a water wheel. The Finca El Pelegrí has decorated doors and an artistically designed ceiling in the salon. The salon now houses the Byzantine Museum, while the former wine cellar is a chapel with cross-shaped arches. The former Finca El Pelegrí estate is the Monasterio de la Trinidad; it could be visited during museum opening hours.

Getting Around

The hiking route operated by the University of Alicante passes through the village of Tángel to the Monasterio de la Trinidad. It follows asphalt and unpaved paths without any significant inclines. The route is 8.5 km long and takes approximately 3.5 hours. The Camins de l’Alacantí cycling route follows traditional paths to Tángel.

The demand-responsive TAD6 service and bus route 26 connect Villafranqueza and Tángel.
