The Colmenares excavations concern a rural settlement from the Middle Iberian period, dating from the 4th to the 3rd century BC. Archaeological finds and pottery from Colmenares point to significant agricultural production, while the specific activity remains unclear.

The historic livestock trail between El Portichol and the watering place at the Barranco de Aguas Amargas was designated the "Cañada Real del Portichol" in 1955.
