The Sierra de Orihuela features rocky vegetation with endemic species and several important micro-reserves for native flora. It is also designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI).

Museums and Remembrance

The Museo de la Muralla is housed in the basement of the Casa del Paso building on the Las Salesas campus of the Miguel Hernández University. It displays the former city wall of Orihuela, Islamic homes and Arab baths, as well as the remains of a Gothic palace and the Casa del Paso.

The Casa Museo Miguel Hernández is located in the house where the poet Miguel Hernández lived with his family. Visitors can see his bedroom, the kitchen, the courtyard with a goat shed and the orchard with its famous fig tree. The tour includes a visitor reception centre, the house museum and a space for temporary exhibitions. In the Casa Natal de Miguel Hernández, rooms with their original furnishings have been preserved.

The Museo Arqueológico San Juan de Dios mainly preserves local or regional materials dating from the Palaeolithic to the 18th century. It houses the “Cruz de los Labradores” or “la Diablesa” processional float by Nicolás de Bussy, dating from 1694–1695.

The Museo de la Semana Santa houses sacred artworks from the 14th to the 21st century, as well as the processional floats of Semana Santa de Orihuela. The Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro mainly preserves religious works, including paintings, sculptures, liturgical objects and vestments, goldsmithing works, religious books and choir books.

The Museo Fundación Pedrera is housed in the Palacio de Sorzano de Tejada, an 18th-century building. In August 2026, the museum was closed to the public.

Festival culture and dates

The Ruta de los Murales de Miguel Hernández runs through the Barrio de San Isidro in Orihuela and explains the poet’s various stages of life. At the Museo de la Reconquista, visitors learn about Orihuela’s Moros y Cristianos festival tradition; at the same time, the museum preserves its significant cultural assets. These include festival costumes, shields and banners belonging to the various comparsas, festival posters, photographs, musical instruments and festival weapons.

Semana Santa de Orihuela is an intangible cultural heritage recognised as being of international tourist interest. Orihuela’s tourism programme for summer 2026 includes cultural and historical tours, family activities, evening experiences, and nature and environmental-awareness routes.

The Ruta del Solsticio de Verano takes place at the Iglesia de Santiago. There, visitors can observe the natural illumination of its façade, a phenomenon that occurs only once a year. A reservation at 672219071 is required for guided tours of the Museo Municipal del Belén Santo Sepulcro.

The “Repostería Barroca” route is scheduled for 10 September and includes a tasting of sweets from Orihuela’s Baroque gastronomic tradition.
