Nature

Monte de Hurchillo lies south of Arneva and Hurchillo. Its northern boundary roughly follows the road connecting the two settlements. Geographically, the monte belongs to a series of hills forming the southern edge of the Vega del Segura on the river’s right bank.

The Sierra de Hurchillo features numerous ravines and slopes and reaches a maximum elevation of 269 metres. This means that different types of terrain coexist within the landscape, from rising slopes to deeply incised ravines. The elevation given refers specifically to the highest point of the sierra.

The local animal and plant life is also described specifically. Birds that breed on Monte de Hurchillo include the common buzzard, as well as rock-dwelling species such as the common kestrel, little owl and European bee-eater. Aleppo pines, mastic shrubs, blackthorn and thyme grow on the monte; there are also plant communities on gypsum-rich soils.

Hiking Trails

Hurchillo has the officially designated SL-CV 139 hiking trail. This trail was improved and positioned, as part of the municipal enhancement of officially designated hiking trails, as an environmental, sporting and tourism resource for residents and visitors. For day planning, this makes it possible to distinguish between a marked hiking trail and a separate, historically focused route format.

The route “Discover the Vega from the Sierra de Hurchillo” was scheduled for Saturday, 19 September. It was intended to explore the landscape and natural surroundings of Orihuela. Its date and the explicitly stated connection with the landscape form part of its route profile at that time.

Culture and History

The history of the village included an official guided route on which the church of Hurchillo was one of the stops. The same route also included the house of singer Pepe Baldó, explained the Hurchillo irrigation system at a place locally known as “el rincón” and included the “Los Aljibes” cultural centre. Its stops therefore connected architectural history, a local artist’s biography, the use of irrigation water and a cultural venue. These different themes provide several clearly distinguishable points of reference for the village’s history without reducing it to a single building or individual.

Pepe Baldó is also associated with a specific biography: José Baldó Javaloyes became known by the stage name Pepe Baldó and earlier as “El Niño de Hurchillo”. He was born in 1935 in Rincón de Portillo, a pedanía of Hurchillo in Orihuela (Alicante).
