Culture and History

The Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Deporte classified the railway village of La Encina as a Bien de Relevancia Local (BRL). As a former railway village in Villena, Alicante, La Encina was shaped by intensive railway activity from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. Historical railway elements are displayed in a sculpture park along the main promenade of La Encina.

La Encina railway station was also built in the mid-19th century to connect Madrid and Alicante. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a 20th-century church in the railway village of La Encina.

These themes open up different perspectives on La Encina.

To explore the village, you can distinguish between architectural, displayed and religious points of reference. These perspectives give the study of La Encina different emphases.

Festivals and Sightseeing

Since 1914, La Encina has celebrated its festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista from 23 to 26 June. The festival week includes activities ranging from the Pregón to the Cremà of the Falla. For personal travel planning, the festival occasion can be considered on the basis of this specific time window.

Guided tours of the railway village of La Encina are available on request and are organised by the Ayuntamiento de Villena. The festival dates mark the period, while the tour offers its own form of sightseeing. Thus, two different approaches stand side by side during a visit: the festivities and the history of the village.

Hiking and Trails

The PR-CV 197 hiking trail ends in Villena-La Encina. Its final section passes over Cerro Rocín and the Cantera de la Encina before reaching the church of La Encina. The route “Desde La Encina a La Zafra” is also listed in Villena’s municipal sports guide.

The trail-related themes can be considered independently alongside the historical and cultural content. For your travel planning, you can switch between outdoor activity and local history and arrange the emphasis according to your own priorities.

When planning personally, you can focus on outdoor activity or local history and weigh the individual information separately. Different travellers can set their interests alongside one another without a fixed programme being prescribed.

When comparing a holiday apartment in La Encina, you can check travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions side by side on the respective offer pages. Keep your preferred focus—cultural events, local history or trails—separate; the selection remains aligned with your own dates and priorities.

Other places: Benimantell, Alcalalí, Canyades d'en Cirus, Arneva, La Canalosa, Barbarroja, El Verger, Javea

The digital dimension also remains open: La Encina’s communal virtual museum remains open to new contributions.
