Culture

One notable cultural venue is the Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi in Salerno. The 19th-century wooden theatre has four tiers of boxes and a gallery. It was inaugurated on 15 April 1872 with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto. The Museo Archeologico Provinciale presents archaeological evidence from the entire province of Salerno – from prehistory to the late Roman imperial period.

The Pinacoteca Provinciale also takes visitors through several centuries. Its collection of paintings ranges from the Renaissance to the 20th century; the permanent exhibition is housed in five halls and includes religious depictions, landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Several architectural layers have been preserved in the Palazzo Arcivescovile: a reused colonnade on the outside, the room of an ancient Roman temple inside and a medieval ground plan.

The Giardino della Minerva focuses on the history of the Scuola Medica Salernitana, botany, medicinal plants and cosmetics. Educational programmes also cover the identification and use of plants as food. In addition, the garden offers guided programmes to places connected with the Scuola Medica Salernitana. In Fratte, the Etruscan-Samnite necropolis was in use from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The archaeological area has been designed as a park; significant excavated remains of the structures have been preserved and are visible.

During the Christmas celebrations, Luci d’Artista has accompanied Salerno for more than two decades. The event brings light installations to streets and squares. Its motifs include myths and fairy tales, nature and stars, performances and emotions.

Nature

The Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park is a mountainous landscape divided by several river valleys descending towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Numerous old paths cross the park, which is also an important hub in the national hiking-trail network. Through the Fuori Traccia project, the national park promotes sustainable tourism and gentle mobility.

The Costiera Amalfitana in the province of Salerno is a UNESCO cultural landscape shaped by the interaction of nature and human activity. Its landscape includes orchards and vineyards cultivated on terraces. The Amalfi Coast comprises 15 municipalities in the province of Salerno. The UNESCO World Heritage sites in the province of Salerno also include parts of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia, and the monumental Certosa di Padula.

Geographical location

Salerno is an important terminus of the maritime connection network between the tourist destinations of the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast. The terraces of the Castello di Arechi offer spectacular views of the Gulf.

In the immediate vicinity of Salerno are the Museo Diocesano Salerno and the Virtual Museum of Salerno's Medical School, both museums.
