Perdifumo combines historical heritage with a mountainous landscape stretching to Monte Stella. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home here will find a starting point for a variety of holiday activities: historic buildings, religious art, a short walking trail with viewpoints and longer routes through the area. Perdifumo is part of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, making it appealing to travellers who want to combine culture and landscape.

Historical traces in Perdifumo and the surrounding area

The historic centre of Perdifumo is characterised by aristocratic palaces with artistically crafted stone portals. The Cenobio di Sant’Arcangelo is considered one of the oldest monastic settlements in Cilento. The history of craftsmanship also goes back a long way: pottery activity using local clay is documented in Perdifumo for the 12th century, producing kitchenware, tableware and storage vessels; this activity is also mentioned for the following century.

In Vatolla stands the 16th-century Castello Vargas-Machucha. The castle features a paved courtyard and a 17th-century mascaron that was used as a fountain. G. Battista Vico stayed there; the castle also houses a library with historical and critical texts about the philosopher and on local history. The Convento di Santa Maria della Pietà is also located in Vatolla; it was founded in 1619 using the older Cappella della Pietà. The water mill of Vatolla was built on an already existing medieval structure.

Churches, monasteries and religious traditions

The parish church of Madonna delle Grazie in Vatolla dates back to the 11th century. Its façade incorporates two fragments of a Roman sarcophagus from the 4th century AD. The Convento Santa Maria della Porziuncola was founded in 1635 and preserves 18th-century paintings as well as carefully crafted statues of saints. In Mercato Cilento, the Convento di Santa Maria del Carmine was fortified in the first half of the 17th century to protect it against attacks by bandits.

The Chiesa di San Sisto Papa displays a distinctive layering of history. The church dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1962 after being largely destroyed by a tornado in 1961. Inside are frescoes from the 1960s, a 17th-century holy water font, an 18th-century altar and a 17th-century statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Pellegrinaggio Confraternite takes place on Good Friday. Every year in Camella, the Volo dell’Angelo takes place during the patron saint’s festival in honour of San Nazario.

Walking trail, mountain landscape and historic routes

The Passeggiata Panoramica in Perdifumo is a 1.5-kilometre walking trail with four viewpoints: Piazza Europa, Piazza Regina Margherita, Santa Sofia and L’Affacciatura. At the end, L’Affacciatura offers views of the Gulf of Salerno and Castellabate. The trail is therefore suitable as a clearly defined activity for a day of holiday, while the mountainous landscape stretching to Monte Stella provides further nature experiences.

Those interested in historic landscapes and longer excursions can include the Cammino dei monaci in their plans. The trekking route leads from the Carpinina area to the Antenne area and passes the ruins of the Sant’Arcangelo monastery. The route is not secured. In the wider surroundings of Perdifumo, Punta della Carpinina is also home to a fortified structure made of isodomic Greek stone blocks dating from the 4th century BC. It is located approximately 1 km southwest of Perdifumo on the boundary between the territories of Poseidonia and Elea and belonged to the latter.

Choosing Perdifumo as a holiday base

When choosing accommodation, it is worth considering your preferred travel rhythm. A holiday apartment in Perdifumo suits a trip focused on local history, churches and viewpoints. Those who primarily want to explore longer routes and the mountainous landscape should take the unsecured nature of the Cammino dei monaci into account when planning their days. Agropoli railway station on the Salerno–Reggio Calabria line is listed as the nearest railway station to Perdifumo.
