San Rufo between mountains, forests and history
Accommodation in San Rufo
San Rufo is a destination for travellers who want to combine mountain landscapes, forest paths, traces of history and regional cuisine. The municipality lies between the mountains Spina dell'Ausino and Cucuzzo delle Puglie and is one of the municipalities within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The Passo della Sentinella connects the Vallo di Diano with the Valle del Calore Salernitano. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore particularly important to consider whether you want to focus on nature experiences, the historic centre, cultural discoveries or a combination of these themes.
Mountain forests and trails for different travel plans
The Boschi di San Rufo extend across hilly and mountainous terrain. Oaks, beech trees and chestnut trees characterise the forest. There are numerous paths where birds of prey, small mammals and many insects can be encountered. At the same time, the Boschi di San Rufo do not have equipped paths and are therefore not accessible to people with reduced mobility. This distinction is important for planning your days when travelling with several generations or with people who have different mobility needs.
A special route is the snowshoe hike from the Passo della Sentinella to Monte Puglie. It begins at a roadside area on the SS166 and leads along a tratturo through pastureland into a beech forest.
Traces of history in the centre and beyond
San Rufo also offers several starting points for days focused on culture. The historic centre includes the old Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore. Fondanieddo is also located there, a very old fountain situated more than 600 metres above sea level and near the Passo della Sentinella. Elegant aristocratic palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries with stone portals add to the historic appearance of the town.
The ruins of the Castello di Calvanello in the hamlet of Calvanello lie immediately outside the historic centre of San Rufo, above the Santuario della Tempa. The complex dates from the 9th to 10th century and served exclusively military purposes. The San Rufo area also contains archaeological finds demonstrating human settlement since the Bronze Age. During a stay, you can therefore combine nature and the present day with traces of human history reaching far back into the past.
Festivals and regional cuisine
The Festa della Madonna della Tempa takes place every year at the Santuario della Tempa outside the built-up area of San Rufo. The Festa della Castagna is an enogastronomic event in San Rufo. It celebrates chestnuts and fruit from the local forests, as well as old farming traditions. If you are planning a trip around local events, you should check the respective dates separately.
The cuisine also reflects the area's rural character. Lagane e ceci is a dish of cucina povera made with lagane, a fresh, broader pasta-like type of noodle, and locally grown chickpeas. Those looking for a holiday apartment can therefore choose San Rufo for its landscapes and history as well as for the town's culinary traditions.
Getting there and choosing a suitable base
San Rufo can be reached via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria, the Atena Lucana–Val d'Agri exit and then the SS598 towards San Rufo. This route is particularly useful if you are choosing your accommodation based on your planned excursions rather than solely on the name of the destination. For cultural days, the historic centre provides a clear focal point; for forest and mountain tours, you should include the connections to the respective starting points in your planning.
More places to consider
If you would like to extend your travel plans to include other places, you can also visit Laureana Cilento, San Mauro Cilento, Casalbuono, San Marzano Sul Sarno, Raito, Battaglia Di Casaletto Spartano, Prignano Cilento and Piaggine.
