Praiano combines impressive coastal views, historic religious buildings and trails with very different characters. Between Marina di Praia, the slopes of Monte S. Angelo a tre Pizzi and traditional festivals, you will find numerous ideas for varied holiday days. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering whether you would like to focus on the sea, culture, walks or special event dates.

Marina di Praia and Scenic Trails

Marina di Praia is a popular bathing spot and a distinctive starting point for experiences by the water. From here, short boat trips can take you to the nearby Grotte di Suppraiano along the surrounding coast. Short boat trips from Marina di Praia can also take you to the nearby Grotta dell'Africana along the surrounding coast. If you would rather experience the coastal area from land, Torre a Mare is a medieval watchtower on the promontory above Marina di Praia. It was built to warn of Saracen invasions.

The walking trails also offer different experiences. The Passeggiata di Grado includes a public staircase leading down to Torre di Grado and the sea. The Passeggiata di Terramare is a short, intensive trail with excellent panoramic views of the coast. The Passeggiata di San Domenico leads along the steps of Via San Domenico. For planning your day, you can therefore choose between a path to the sea, a short section with views and a route along historic steps, without making all your activities the same.

Churches, Ceramics and Historic Details

Praiano is particularly interesting if you want to look at architecture not only from the outside but also pay attention to individual design details. Chiesa di San Luca is a Baroque parish church dating from 1588. It was restored in 1772 and stands on an earlier building from 1123. Its described features include a majolica dome integrated directly into the apse and a majolica floor from 1789 decorated with flowers and birds. At its centre, San Luca is depicted painting.

Chiesa di San Gennaro is a Renaissance basilica with three naves and a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. Its dome is a polychrome majolica dome. Chiesa San Giovanni was built around the 11th or 12th century and was formerly the town's main church. It preserves examples of the Neapolitan school, including a majolica floor from 1790 and a pipe organ with gallery from 1795. Praiano also has numerous votive chapels and small places of worship from earlier or more recent periods, decorated with frescoes or ceramics.

Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Castro is located on the slopes of Monte S. Angelo a tre Pizzi at 364 metres above sea level and overlooks the Fontanella Valley. Inside is a large fresco in the apse calotte of the left side aisle; the building was constructed in 1430 following a papal concession. These details also make the site interesting for travellers who like to combine historical development, religious art and landscape.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Several dates give travel planning a special cultural dimension. The Festa di San Luca takes place on the first Sunday in July and follows a tradition that has existed for more than three centuries. The Festa di San Gennaro in Praiano is celebrated on the first Sunday in May, on 19 September and on 16 December. During the Luminaria di San Domenico, the residents of Praiano decorate the forecourt of the church of Santa Maria ad Castro every evening from 1 to 4 August with 2,000 candles each year. At I Suoni degli Dei, concerts take place on the forecourt of Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Castro along the Sentiero degli Dei.

Praiano as a Starting Point for Your Trip

To reach Praiano, you can travel by car via coastal road 163 or by public transport on the Sorrento–Positano–Amalfi route. When looking for accommodation, you can take this journey into account alongside your preferred experiences: Marina di Praia and the coastal paths favour a stay focused on the sea and views, while the churches, chapels and festival dates bring cultural interests to the forefront. A holiday apartment gives you your own starting point for the holiday days you put together, without requiring you to commit to just one type of trip.
