Discover Ispani: Hills, History and Capitello
Accommodation in Ispani
Ispani combines an elevated location with the distinctive character of the Gulf of Policastro. The town lies on a hill overlooking the gulf, while Capitello belongs to the municipality as a coastal hamlet. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Ispani can therefore discover different sides of the destination: the historic atmosphere of the hill town, Capitello’s connection to the coast and excursions through a landscape on the edge of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, del Vallo di Diano e Alburni.
Between the hill town and the coastal hamlet
The location shapes how you get your bearings locally. Ispani itself offers views over the Gulf of Policastro and a starting point for exploring the history of the municipality. Capitello lies by the sea as a coastal hamlet and has a notable religious site, San Ferdinando Re, at the centre of the hamlet. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you would rather focus your trip on Ispani’s elevated location or on the character of Capitello.
Two routes are particularly relevant for getting around by road. The Strada Statale 18 Tirrena inferiore is the main road connection for Ispani. The Strada Provinciale 110 connects Ispani and Capitello.
Churches, towers and traces of the past
Ispani’s main church is dedicated to San Nicola di Bari and dates back to an old foundation. In Capitello, San Ferdinando Re recalls the religious history of the coastal hamlet. The original building consisted of a single nave with a semicircular apse and a bell tower. The church can be reached by motor vehicle via a level road running inland, parallel to the waterfront promenade. This specific access route is a practical point of reference, but says nothing about whether the interior can currently be visited.
The secular history of the area is also present in several places. Castellaro was a 12th-century castle and formed part of Policastro’s defensive ring. The enclosing walls, a carriage arch, a sentry box and a marble plaque remain from Palazzo Carafa. The Torre Normanna in Capitello was included in the FAI “I Luoghi del Cuore” campaigns in 2020 and 2022. The tower is currently privately owned and therefore cannot be visited. Nevertheless, it remains a distinctive part of the local history that you can place within Capitello’s historic character when planning your trip.
Nature, trails and local festivals
The church of San Cristoforo in the hamlet of the same name adds another historic destination. The church dates from the 16th century. Those who would like to include time in nature alongside cultural experiences will find a green area with equipped spaces for relaxation and excursions in Bosco Catena. This makes it possible to combine historic discoveries with quieter hours outdoors, without every activity having to form part of a fixed circular route.
In summer, Ispani hosts food festivals with tastings of typical local products, including cheese, cured meats and fish dishes. In July, the Festa di San Cristoforo is held in the hamlet of the same name, with processions and community gatherings. Such dates add a seasonal accent to trip planning. When looking for accommodation in Ispani, you can therefore decide whether to focus your stay more on historic sites, excursions in nature or summer traditions.
