Discover Ceraso
Accommodation in Ceraso
Ceraso combines local history, river landscapes and Mediterranean nature in an impressive way. The area lies in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, at an elevation of around 300 metres and in a partly mountainous and hilly landscape. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Ceraso will find an ideal base for cultural discoveries, walks along the Palistro and excursions into surroundings characterised by macchia as well as alder, beech and chestnut forests.
Palaces and local history in Ceraso
The town’s historic character is particularly evident in its buildings. Palazzo Di Lorenzo is an imposing 19th-century building. The original flooring has been preserved in the rooms on the ground floor. Palazzo Iannicelli also dates from the 19th century and forms the end of Ceraso’s main square towards the church district. Lancillotti–Ebner, dating from the 15th century, is another of the town’s significant historic palaces.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Nicola shapes the urban structure of the old town. The oldest part of the town is home to the Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari, built in 1790. Together with the historic buildings, it illustrates the development of the town. Ceraso grew up around the Via del Sale, an important connecting route between the Veline routes and the Ionian coast. For travellers who value culture and landscapes equally, the town’s history can thus be combined with exploring the surrounding area.
Out and about along the Palistro
The Palistro River runs through the Ceraso area and is an important destination for outdoor excursions. Paths for excursions and sports activities have been created along the river. One particularly notable section is La Passeggiata di Parmenide. The route passes through Ceraso, Massascusa and San Biase, following the Palistro.
In Ceraso, the town park named after Pietro Ebner on the Palistro forms part of this route. It features seating areas, small waterfalls and paths through lush vegetation. Those wishing to combine an active day with more peaceful stretches can include these varied landscape impressions in their plans. For the past 40 years, the Festa del Fiume has also been held in a designated area on the banks of the Palistro in the centre of Ceraso.
Nature, lake and regional highlights
The surrounding area also offers a variety of destinations beyond the town centre. Bosco Bruca is a woodland area with chestnut, alder and walnut trees, making it suitable for walks and excursions. Lago Fabbrica is an artificial lake created to irrigate the Piana di Velia; sport fishing is also practised there. In San Biase, the ancient watermill on the Palistro is considered a cultural monument worth seeing.
The area’s cultural diversity also includes the Chiesa di San Biagio in San Biase and its art-historically significant frescoes. They were discovered beside the altar in 1998 and probably date from the 14th century. The frescoes display an Eastern artistic influence. Another regional feature is Ceraso’s centuries-old olive groves and the region’s characteristic oil.
