Discover Capitello
Accommodation in Capitello
Capitello brings together coastal scenery, local culture and historical traces within a compact thematic area, without this having to result in one uniform type of holiday. Those looking for a holiday apartment can choose between relaxed days at the beach, cultural discoveries and a scenic path to San Cristoforo. Capitello is a coastal district of the municipality of Ispani; the SS18 runs through the locality and thus provides a clear orientation point for arrival. From here, you can also take the SP110 to Ispani and San Cristoforo.
Beach, church and small cultural sites
Spiaggia di Capitello offers both free beach sections and managed bathing areas. This allows you to plan your stay in different ways: you can organise a beach day more independently or choose a managed area. This distinction is just as interesting for families as it is for travellers who want to alternate between quiet hours and a more organised day at the beach.
In the centre of the coastal district, Chiesa di San Ferdinando Re stands on a road running parallel to the promenade. The location is flat and accessible by motor vehicle. The original church was a single-nave space with a semicircular apse and a bell tower adjoining it on the side. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was extended by a small side nave and additional rooms. Those interested in local architectural history can gain a concrete insight here into the development of a religious building.
Another point of interest is the Piccolo Museo della Bambola “Cinzia Falcone”. It originated from a collection of dolls from different periods, donated to the community by a woman of Cilentan origin. Its name and its origins in a private donation give the museum a personal, locally rooted character. Together with the church, it can provide a cultural addition to a stay at the beach, without limiting the day’s travel plans to a single activity.
Historical traces around Capitello
The surrounding area also bears witness to different periods. The Torre costiera del ’500 in Capitello is considered a former defensive and observation tower. It was built to spot Saracen ships. On the hill near Capitello now known as Castellaro, the military leader Ruggiero I, together with his nephew Ruggiero d’Apulia, had a Norman castle built around 1055; remains have been documented there.
The former Palazzo Carafa is also part of the historic townscape. Its entrance arch to the gardens is topped by an inscription that warned potential intruders of the determination of the feudal lords of the time. The enclosing walls that border the garden have survived from the former complex. The former Palazzo Carafa now houses a monastery owned by the Suore Elisabettine Bigie. You should include these testimonies in your planning as historical points of reference; this does not imply anything about current visiting opportunities.
The stone path to San Cristoforo
Capitello and San Cristoforo are connected by a stone path created in 2014. The path is described as a long staircase with resting points and views over the gulf between the coasts of Maratea and Infreschi. This creates a clear contrast with the flat area of the locality: anyone looking for a route with numerous steps and viewpoints will find a different travel experience here from that of a purely beach-based day. Take this characteristic into account when planning your day and choose the location of your accommodation according to the mix of coast, culture and excursions you prefer.
Traditions and travel planning
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua took place in Capitello on 12 and 13 June. During the Processione del pane held on 12 June, believers brought baskets of bread to be blessed and then gave them to relatives. On the afternoon of 13 June, the Riffa included an auction to collect donations, offering items donated by believers and typical local products. These elements of the festival reveal Capitello’s religious and communal side; however, they should be understood as time-specific information and not as a year-round programme.
For local orientation, the Comune di Ispani operated the Punto Blu, a tourist information office on the Capitello promenade, from 15 July to 15 September 2026. Depending on the focus of your trip, Capitello can therefore serve as a starting point for the beach, culture, historical topics or the path to San Cristoforo. For further destinations to help with orientation, see Bellosguardo, Capezzano, Marina Di Camerota, Altavilla Silentina, Felitto, Casaburi, Calvanico and Laureana Cilento.
