Caggiano: History, Trails and Local Festivals
Accommodation in Caggiano
Caggiano combines a historically shaped townscape with impressive landscapes and lively festival traditions. Those planning a trip combining culture, short excursions and regional cuisine will find various options for planning their days here. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Caggiano, it is therefore worth first deciding on your main focus: should the trip be shaped primarily by lanes and churches, landscape experiences, or culinary and cultural events?
History among the castle, lanes and churches
The Castello Normanno del Guiscardo and the fortifications of Caggiano date from the 9th or 10th century and served to defend the town. Part of the Castello Normanno del Guiscardo is used for exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events. In addition, the Museo Antiquarium Civico preserves archaeological materials from the burial monument of the Insteii.
The past can be experienced particularly vividly in the historic centre. There, a winding network of lanes, stairways and squares, together with numerous traces of the past, shapes the townscape. Circular engravings stand out on the façade of one church; in another church, side chapels with dedications commemorate influential local families. Those interested in the history of sacred architecture can also take note of the Chapel of San Luca: it was built in the 13th century and had an adjoining hospital until 1864, where pilgrims were treated and accommodated.
Santa Maria dei Greci also represents Caggiano’s layered history. According to local tradition, its history dates back to the middle of the 6th century. The original Greek-cross layout is associated with the Basilian monks and Orthodox worship. Santa Venere, also known as the Cappella di Santa Veneranda or Chiesa di Santa Sofia, probably dates from the 11th century. The single-nave Greek-Byzantine church with a semicircular apse lies outside the city walls on a rocky spur and is visible from the valley and from the Portuccia and Marvicino viewpoints.
Landscape along the Melandro
The Melandro River runs through the Caggiano area and forms the physical boundary between the regions of Campania and Basilicata. The Grotte dello Zachito are located within the municipality, north to northeast of the town and near the river. The landscape thus complements the historical impressions with its own nature-oriented aspect of the trip.
During an approximately one-hour walk through the canyon formed by the Melandro, you can discover several sulphur springs and the rock formations informally known as the Faraglioni. Another way to combine the townscape and landscape is the panoramic path from Portuccia. It runs along the eastern edge of the historic centre and leads through the sloping rocky terrain to the Church of Santa Venere. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between a day in the lanes, a walk through the canyon and a route offering views of the church.
Festivals and regional cuisine
Since the 1970s, Ferragosto Caggianese has included food festivals, games, theatre and music performances, as well as a White Night. At the 32nd edition of the “Percorso Culinario nel borgo di Caggiano” in 2024, at least five local specialities were offered in the evening along the streets of the historic centre. In addition to the historic sights, these events give the trip a culinary and community-oriented focus.
You should therefore choose your accommodation to suit your preferred travel rhythm. If you primarily want to explore the historic centre, churches and cultural attractions, you can choose the location of your holiday apartment with this part of town in mind. For a stay with a stronger focus on the landscape, the Melandro, the canyon and the path from Portuccia offer distinct areas of interest.
