Roccagloriosa between Archaeology and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Roccagloriosa
Roccagloriosa combines a multifaceted past with an impressive mountain landscape. Archaeological sites, ecclesiastical art, narrow alleyways and the Capitenali-La Scala nature trail give your trip different focal points. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house can therefore first decide whether their days should be shaped primarily by culture, walks, historical discoveries or a mixture of these.
Archaeology from the Lucanian Settlement to the Museum
The Lucanian settlement of Roccagloriosa was founded in the 5th century BC and abandoned in the 3rd century BC. The necropolis of Roccagloriosa is also part of the archaeological history. Tomb 6 at La Scala is considered the oldest tomb in the necropolis and contains an exceptional assemblage of bronze objects made in Etruscan-Campanian style.
The Museo Civico Archeologico “Antonella Fiammenghi” preserves materials from the necropolises, the settlement and the sacred areas of Roccagloriosa. The archaeological museum is housed in the former Church of Santa Maria dei Martiri. The “Sabato Balbi” Antiquarium additionally displays finds from excavations at the site; monumental tombs from the La Scala necropolis, including tombs 19 and 24, are also exhibited there. For families, this combination of clearly presented artefacts, local history and specific names can be a good reason to consciously plan the cultural part of their holiday.
Historic Centre and Sacred Art
Between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, the Centro Storico acquired a defensive ring built from limestone blocks. The necropolis lay outside this ring. Today, narrow alleyways, steep stairways and vaulted passageways characterise the historic centre. They open onto viewpoints overlooking the Gulf of Policastro, Monte Bulgheria and the valleys of the Mingardo and Bussento rivers.
The ruins of the castle stand at the highest point of the town. Several churches complete the historic setting: the Church of S. Giovanni Battista, located in the Centro Storico, was founded in 1101 by Prince Ruggero. The Church of the Confraternita del Rosario preserves a fresco cycle from the late 16th century, while the Church of San Mercurio preserves a wooden crucifix from the first half of the 16th century. In the Cappella del SS. Sacramento, also known as S. Angelo, 17th-century frescoes depicting the Nativity, the Sacrifice of Isaac, Saint Francis and Saint Catherine have been preserved.
Walking Trail, Views and Local Orientation
The Capitenali-La Scala nature trail crosses Monte Bulgheria and reaches the necropolis of Fistelia. It is considered a walking trail that is also suitable for families with children, older people and people with disabilities. This makes it possible to spend an active day differently from a tour through the Centro Storico: while the town centre concentrates historic architectural forms and sacred art, the trail leads into the landscape and connects it with an archaeological destination.
Two fixed dates also provide guidance for planning your days. The Roccagloriosa weekly market takes place on Tuesdays. The feast day of the patron saint San Giovanni Battista is celebrated on 24 June.
