Discover San Pietro al Tanagro through its churches and the landscape around the Setone. In Parco dei Mulini, a small valley, wooded mountain slopes and water shape the natural surroundings; the places of worship tell of building phases spanning the Middle Ages to modern times. There are also trails with different characteristics and festivals tied to specific dates. This lets you choose a focus for your stay—culture, nature or mountains.

The Setone, mills and trails

Parco dei Mulini covers about ten hectares in a small valley between wooded mountain slopes, cut through by a stream. There, the Setone forms rocky waterfalls in winter. The stream, wooded slopes and waterfalls together shape the park’s landscape.

The park is also home to Percorso Vita, a trail equipped with exercise stations and suitable for different age groups. In Località Difesa, a nature trail follows the Setone, passing natural waterfalls and the remains of old mills. The two trails offer different experiences: Percorso Vita focuses on its exercise stations, while the trail in Località Difesa links the stream, waterfalls and mill remains.

Two water mills are located in Località Setone, within Parco dei Mulini. One has been restored. The mills probably date from between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their history adds a chapter about traditional crafts to the landscape, and the tentative dating indicates a time span rather than a single construction year.

Churches and building history

The original Chiesa Madre di San Pietro Apostolo already existed at the beginning of the 12th century; the town of San Pietro grew around it. The larger church building was completely rebuilt between 1815 and 1824. A pair of medieval lions flanks the entrance portal. The figures came from San Marzano, a nearby settlement that no longer exists. The Chiesa Madre thus brings together several historical points of interest: the early church, the later rebuilding and the lions from another settlement.

Different building phases can also be seen at the Chiesa e Convento di Santa Maria del Piano: the church already existed in the 15th century, while the monastery dates from the 17th century. Santa Maria del Piano is a Franciscan monastery. This is indicated by the Franciscan coat of arms carved into the arch of the entrance portal, showing the crossed arms of Francis and Jesus. The dates and the symbol on the portal offer two concrete points of reference if you are interested in the site’s religious history.

The Cappella di San Giuseppe dates from 1726 and has a marble altar from 1891. The Cappella di San Giovanni offers another historical feature of the town: it is the church, built in the 18th century, of the old Borgo La Torre. A document from the mid-19th century refers to it as “San Giovanni nella Torre.” The Fontana di Canali offers a different architectural feature. Built in 1850, it has basins and historical inscriptions.

A mountain destination and festival days

The Santuario del SS Crocifisso was built in 1899 on Monte Ausiliatrice, at an altitude of about 750 metres. The mountain was subsequently named Monte del Crocifisso. The summit is accessible only on foot, via a rough path through steep, precipitous mountain terrain. These access conditions set this mountain destination apart from the trails around the Setone and are worth factoring into your plans if you want to visit the summit.

The Feast of the SS Crocifisso is associated with pilgrimages on the first Sunday in May and the third Sunday in September. The Feast of San Giuseppe in San Pietro al Tanagro is marked by bonfires in the individual districts on the eve of the feast and a Mass on the morning of 19 March, where onion plants are sold. If you want to plan your stay around one of these festivals, check the event dates in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment in San Pietro al Tanagro, it helps to have a clear idea of your trip: churches and building phases, trails around the Setone or the footpath to the summit each offer a different focus. First, consider which aspect of the town matters most for your stay.
