Cosentini offers several ways to explore its history and traditions: a community-focused carnival, traces of earlier agriculture, and buildings with religious and architectural histories. There is also the Alta Via del Monte Stella, whose route follows a scenic ridge. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects of the town you would like to shape your stay most.

Carnival as a community tradition

The Cosentini Carnival takes place every year and involves the entire community. The programme includes a masked procession, the Ballata di Zeza and a tarantella. Pulcinella, Zeza, Vincenzella and Zì Ron Nicola appear in the Ballata. A choir and traditional folk music accompany the festivities.

The tradition also includes sharing food and wine during the fire, at which Carnuluvaro is burned. The carnival thus brings together different forms of expression: masks and characters, music and dance, and shared meals. Anyone interested in living traditions will find a tangible glimpse here of a festival that returns every year.

Palmenti and traces of agriculture

The palmenti of Cosentini are large stone vats in the open air, carved out of monoliths. Different growers used them to press grapes. They make an earlier agricultural activity tangible: the palmenti are not merely names from local history, but surviving stone structures with a clear purpose.

The history of the landscape is also connected with cultivation. During the Borgia period, vineyards, fig orchards and olive groves were established in Cosentini. Wooden olive presses survive as evidence of this agricultural activity. Together, these details show different aspects of working with grapes and olives, without needing to be treated as a single complex or part of one shared walking route.

Palace, chapel and Church of the Assunta

The Borgia family acquired the old baronial palace in Cosentini and had it restored. Below Cosentini, a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria del Valloncello had existed since the 14th century. The renovated church on the site of this chapel is now dedicated to the Assunta, the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Santa Maria del Valloncello may originally have been an old hermitage.

The Church of the Assunta has a three-part façade in the rational neoclassical style. Four pilasters divide it, and a pediment crowns the façade. The statue of the Assunta is also part of an annual tradition: on 15 August, it is carried from dawn until evening to other churches and chapels in the surrounding area, then returned to its church. The architecture and feast day offer different points of interest if you are interested in architecture or religious traditions.

Alta Via del Monte Stella and choosing accommodation

Along the Alta Via del Monte Stella, the route follows a ridge that offers particularly scenic views; visibility depends on the weather. A hike can start in Cosentini and continue through the Montanari area to the provincial road. Trail conditions may vary seasonally.

When choosing accommodation, you can therefore weigh up different travel interests: would you mainly like to discover the carnival and historical sites, or would you also like to include a hike on the Alta Via in your plans? The possibility of starting the hike in Cosentini is a practical consideration; in itself, it says nothing about the features of individual holiday apartments.
