Aquara overlooks the Valle del Calore and is surrounded by the Monti Alburni. The town therefore combines landscape experiences with a strong culture of celebration and remembrance. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Aquara can shape their stay around different interests: trails for trekking and cycling, horseback rides, historic sites or festivals closely connected with the town’s traditions.

Trails between the town centre, river and mountain landscape

A clear starting point for an active day is the Percorso da Aquara alla Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo. It begins at the foot of Aquara’s built-up town centre and ends near the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo in the municipality of Sant’Angelo a Fasanella. The route runs entirely on asphalt and is suitable for cycling. This information can help when choosing accommodation if you want to plan your trip around a specific route rather than just a general impression of the landscape.

Another signposted connection is the Percorso di San Lucido. It leads from the Abbazia di San Pietro to the Pietra di San Lucido in the Calore River and can also be cycled. The area around Aquara also offers numerous trails for trekking and horseback riding. Rafting is possible on the Calore River. An equipped picnic area is located there in the Località Mainardi, allowing nature experiences and a more peaceful break to be combined in the day’s plans.

The Località Iannace and the Pineta Iannace are also part of the area’s excursion options. The mountain-bike route from Aquara begins in the Località Iannace and leads to the former sports ground. In the Pineta Iannace there is a wayside shrine dedicated to the Madonna del Cantiere.

Historic Sites and Living Traditions

Aquara’s cultural profile is reflected both in its buildings and in its festivals. The Palazzo Ducale is a ducal palace dating from the 12th century. It includes a cloister with a portico and vaulted ceilings decorated with artistically valuable frescoes. The upper floor contains a monumental, fan-shaped fountain made of local stone. The Ruderi dell’Abbazia Benedettina di S. Pietro are the remains of a Benedictine monastery that was elevated to abbey status. The monk Lucido lived in this monastery complex and is regarded as the town’s patron saint.

The Carnevale di Aquara plays a special role. It has been included in the inventory of Campania’s intangible cultural heritage, IPIC. As a fertility rite, it celebrates the agricultural production cycle and the transition from winter to spring. The Carnevale Aquarese is connected with rural culture and traditionally includes a procession through the town’s streets. In the square, the Carnevale Aquarese represents the months of the year.

Religious festivals also provide distinctive landmarks throughout the year. The Festa di S. Lucido takes place every year on 27 and 28 July in honour of Saint Lucido. The Festa di San Rocco is celebrated on 18 and 19 August in honour of Saint Roch. The Festa di Santa Maria del Piano falls on 11 and 12 September; on 12 September, it includes a procession from the parish church to the Piano chapel and, after the service, a torchlit procession back into town.

The Right Base for Planning Your Trip

Whether you focus on cycling routes, nature, historic sites or festival traditions, Aquara offers different ways to explore them. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider which experiences should shape your stay. For active days, the routes described, trekking opportunities and rafting on the Calore are relevant; for culture-focused trips, the Palazzo Ducale, Abbazia di S. Pietro and festival days are the main attractions. Several parking areas are available in Aquara. For arrival, Capaccio is listed as the nearest railway station; from there, buses to Aquara operated by Sita and Pecoraro are listed.
