Discover Perito: Churches, Trails and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Perito
Perito combines sacred history, trails through the Cilento landscape and a vibrant culinary tradition. Those who wish to combine culture and nature on holiday will find a variety of opportunities here for their own discoveries: churches and ruins tell the story of the town, trails lead to chapels and viewpoints, and in August the local cuisine takes centre stage at the Festa nel Bosco. This combination helps you choose the right accommodation for a stay featuring cultural visits, walks and special culinary experiences.
Churches and Historical Traces in Perito
The parish church of San Nicola di Bari dates back to the 16th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of Perito. The bell tower stands directly beside the church and was built by reusing an old tower from the Angevin period. This allows a visit to the parish church to be complemented by another historical detail.
The district of Ostigliano is also home to an important place of worship: the mother church of San Giovanni Battista dates back to the mid-16th century. Its furnishings included three altars – the high altar, the Rosary altar of the Università and the altar of Santa Caterina. Admission to the church of San Giovanni Battista is free. If you are interested in the older history of the town and ecclesiastical art, this visit is ideal as a separate item on your itinerary.
Further traces can be found in Perito Sottano. The ruins of Perito’s first urban settlement are located there, along with the visible ruins of the church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. The church of Santa Maria Maddalena already existed in 1500. The chapel of Madonna del Monte also stands at the entrance to Perito. Its single-nave layout, small altar and lack of an apse give it a clearly describable, simple form.
Trails, River Landscape and Views
In Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, the Alento River flows through the municipalities of Cicerale and Perito. The town offers various starting points for walks and hikes. Along the Sentiero del Soldato, signs point the way to the chapel of Madonna di Loreto. The route from Perito to the Cappella di Santa Maria della Croce di Stio is part of the Sentieri della Croce and offers panoramic viewpoints over the Alento Valley and towards Monte Stella.
Another viewpoint is located in Perito Sottano: from there, the view extends to the Torre di Velia and, in particularly clear weather, as far as the island of Stromboli. Depending on your interests, you can therefore plan a stay featuring historical destinations, a signposted trail or expansive landscape views, without having to limit the focus of your trip to just one type of experience in advance.
Local Cuisine in the Chestnut Grove
The Festa nel Bosco is a gastronomic event held in August in a chestnut grove. Traditional Cavatielli, handmade by women from Perito, are served there. The dishes are prepared using products from local producers and livestock farmers. The event is particularly interesting for your travel plans if you would like to experience regional traditions not only through buildings, but also through shared meals and cuisine shaped by traditional craftsmanship.
