Acerno combines impressive mountain landscapes, waterways, historic buildings and a distinctive culinary tradition. The municipality lies in the heart of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini. This makes it a destination for anyone looking to combine nature experiences with cultural discoveries and regional specialities when choosing their holiday apartment.

Mountains, forests and waterways

One defining landscape feature is Monte Polveracchio, which reaches an altitude of 1,790 metres and has been designated a nature reserve since 1988. The Tusciano River rises in the mountains of Acerno and crosses the municipality's valleys. This allows visitors to experience different aspects of the landscape: mountain ranges, wooded areas, valleys and waterways form part of the area's characteristic scenery.

Several trails lead through this landscape for those interested in hiking. The Fiumara di Tannera route runs through the Gole di Tannera. The Fiumara di Tannera is regarded as a special waterway of the Monti Picentini and leads through centuries-old beech forests, rocky gorges and mountain streams. If you are planning a longer mountain hike, you can also consider stage SI S08 of the Sentiero Italia CAI. It reaches Acerno via the wooded western slope of Monte Polveracchio and includes 1,000 metres of descent. Take this descent into account when planning your day if you are choosing accommodation for your travel plans.

Churches, ruins and industrial history

Acerno also has several notable points of interest in terms of cultural history. The ruins of one of two historic paper mills are visible in the valley. The mill was probably built between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. To the north-west of the present-day settlement are the ruins of ancient Acerno. The former monastery with the Church of Sant'Antonio is also one of the town's historic and architectural landmarks.

Several churches with different historical and architectural features stand out in the townscape. Santa Maria degli Angeli dates from around 1504. The Church of Madonna delle Grazie has been documented since 1436; the Madonna delle Grazie sanctuary was originally called Chiesa dell’Immacolata e delle Grazie and was built around 1615. The Co-Cathedral of San Donato has a three-nave floor plan and a barrel vault. It was enriched with Baroque decoration in the 17th and 18th centuries, including a high altar with inlaid marble. Acerno Cathedral has a Latin-cross floor plan, a very high central nave and a dome above the broad transept. Its central gate depicts Saint Donatus, Bishop of Arezzo and a 4th-century martyr.

Another special feature is Acerno's industrial archaeology park. It brings together historic landmarks, mining activities, geological resources and landscape values. The park can be reached via a footpath that follows the former access route to the public washhouse and the existing municipal Ferriera road. It therefore complements visits to the natural surroundings and churches with an insight into the town's industrial past.

Discover local specialities

The Fragolata di Acerno is part of Acerno's distinctive identity. This traditionally produced speciality has been made exclusively from wild woodland strawberries, Fragaria vesca L., from the Acerno area since 1981. In the production facilities, it is offered in portions of approximately 120 grams. Local cheese specialities also include mozzarella, ricotta and caciocavallo. They are made from the milk of Podolica cattle from the Acerno area. Anyone who values regional products when travelling will find specific culinary themes here for their own daily planning.

Choose Acerno as a holiday destination

A holiday apartment in Acerno is particularly well suited to a trip that combines nature, history and local cuisine. For active days, the Fiumara di Tannera, the Gole di Tannera and the Sentiero Italia CAI stage are the main highlights. On other days, you can include the churches, historic ruins or the industrial archaeology park in your itinerary. This leaves room for different interests and for a changing rhythm between landscape experiences and culture.
