Vibonati combines a largely intact medieval village with an unusually rich history. The historic centre stretches for almost 2 kilometres along a narrow, elongated rocky spur at an altitude of around 110 metres. Many of the lanes are paved with stone, and large parts of the centre can only be explored on foot. When choosing your holiday apartment, this primarily means planning your days around walks through the old town and taking into account the pedestrian access to the historic area.

Old Town, Portals and Sacred Art

Vibonati is known as the “Town of Portals”. Numerous medieval stone portals shape the townscape and turn even the route between individual sights into a journey of discovery. The historic architecture also includes the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, with frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries. A torrino is attached to the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità, preserving a trace of Vibonati’s former fortification system.

Several eras come together at the Santuario di Sant'Antonio abate. The sanctuary dates from the 11th century; its furnishings include an 18th-century organ and a painting of the Madonna del Rosario attributed to the school of the Flemish painter Teodoro D'Errico. The Palazzo De Nicolellis dates from around 1400. On 3 September 1860, it hosted Giuseppe Garibaldi—a specific historical connection that gives the building additional significance.

History to Discover Together

The Monastero di San Francesco da Paola also takes visitors back into the history of the town. It was founded in 1611 and has a central cloister with arches and octagonal columns. Those interested in how places developed and what functions they served in the past can also put the history of the Torre Petrosa in Villammare into context: the tower was built in 1595 and, after the end of the Turkish threat, served as a sanitary cordon against the plague epidemic of 1656.

Guided experiences in Vibonati include a visit to the Borgo Antico di Vibonati. The Museo Logos offers an educational theatrical projection introducing visitors to the origins of the museum. This makes it possible for families with different interests to combine local history, architecture and a museum experience in one day, without every activity having to be of the same nature.

Museums, Traditions and Landscapes

The Casa Museo di Arte Contadina contains numerous agricultural implements from the past century. It focuses on working tools and rural ways of life, while the patronal feast of Sant'Antonio Abate on 17 January has a fixed place in Vibonati’s calendar. These different perspectives can help you choose between a trip focused on architectural history, local tradition or everyday culture.

There is also a natural attraction outside the town centre: the Bosco di Santa Lucia in the municipality of Vibonati covers around 40 hectares. Coniferous and deciduous trees grow there, especially cork oaks. Those looking for a more peaceful landscape experience alongside the stone-paved lanes can include this woodland in their personal travel plans.
