Bosco brings together art, a long monastic history and the landscape around Monte Bulgheria. An unusual sight greets you as you enter the village: a mural by José Ortega, made up of 196 painted majolica tiles depicting marching Bourbon soldiers. In the village and its surroundings, you’ll find different starting points for a trip that combines culture and nature.

Landscape around Monte Bulgheria

Bosco lies at the foot of Monte Bulgheria, overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. The village is in Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano and is surrounded by woodland, evergreen trees and Mediterranean scrub. This landscape shapes the nature-focused part of your trip planning; at the same time, views of the gulf can be combined with the village’s cultural attractions.

The Costa degli Infreschi e della Masseta marine protected area is near Bosco. Its coastal landscape includes limestone cliffs and numerous caves. Wild orchids are also part of the flora of Monte Bulgheria, though their blooming season varies. Nature offers a range of impressions here: the mountain’s vegetation and the striking coastline of the protected area.

Ortega’s Art and the History of Bosco

The mural at the village entrance brings José Ortega’s art into the public realm. You can see more of his work at the Museo Ortega, which officially opened on March 17, 2011. The “Segadores” suite features twenty engravings. There are also ten Kartapesta panels from the “Passarono” and “Morte e Nascita degli Innocenti” cycles. These different groups of works, together with the large-scale tiled mural, give you specific points of reference for a cultural visit to Bosco.

Bosco’s origins are linked to the church of San Nicola di Bari. It belonged to an important abbey founded by Basilian monks around the year 1000. The Abbazia di San Nicola di Bosco existed for about five centuries with autonomous jurisdiction. When Bosco was burned to the ground on the night of July 6–7, 1828, the church of San Nicola was spared. A baptismal font dating from 1545 survives in the former Cenobio of San Nicola di Bosco; it is the oldest visible remnant of the cenobio. A stone holy-water stoup decorated with reliefs of aquatic animals, dating from 1650, has also been preserved in Bosco.

August is also marked by a local tradition: Bosco celebrates the feast of San Rocco in particular, with processions and civic festivities involving the entire local community. Nearby, the Cenobio Basiliano di San Giovanni a Piro was built by Basilian monks in 990. It is known for its battlemented tower. This nearby building adds another site shaped by Basilian monks to the history of the Abbey of San Nicola.

Hiking and Practical Information

For a more active itinerary, consider the short circular trail on the lower slopes of Monte Bulgheria, which ends in Bosco. The hiking trails around Monte Bulgheria are maintained by CAI Monte Bulgheria. Check trail conditions and waymarking before setting out. Wild orchids are another natural feature of the area, though their blooming season varies with the time of year.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh your planned activities according to your travel group’s interests: art and local history offer a different focus from hiking trails and landscapes. If you’d like to include both, you can plan for Bosco’s cultural attractions alongside the nature of the surrounding area. This will help you choose accommodation that suits the experiences you want to shape your days.
