Giungano brings together impressive landscapes and traces of a long history. Trails wind through gorges and along cliffs, while palazzi and churches in the town tell stories of centuries past. The white fig of Cilento and Antica Pizza Cilentana add to the picture. If you would like to include nature experiences, local history and regional cuisine in your trip, Giungano offers a variety of ways to do so.

Gorges, Waterfalls and Views

The many trails on Monte Sottano and Monte Cantenna offer botanical and natural history routes across slopes, rocky steps and gorges. Springs, waterfalls and caves are also among the area’s described landscape features. Mediterranean scrubland shapes the landscape across 30 hectares of Bosco dell’Elci; strawberry trees, described as endangered, grow there predominantly. This gives the area a distinctive botanical character.

In the Gola di Tremonti, a waterfall about 50 metres high plunges from the edge of Monte Cantenna through the gorges into a valley surrounded by lush vegetation. Another appealing view of the landscape can be enjoyed from Giungano’s higher points: from there, the panorama stretches from the Gulf of Salerno to the mountains of the Cilento hinterland. Water, rock and expansive views each offer a different perspective—an option for anyone who likes to shape their trip around observing nature and getting active.

Trails with a History of Their Own

The Gole di Tremonti route starts in Giungano and follows the Solofrone. Along the way are the remains of old mills once used to make flour. The trail combines an exploration of the landscape with traces of work from the past. The Sentiero dei Tre Monti also takes you through distinctive surroundings: it runs between lower Giungano and upper Trentinara through the Vallone Tremonti, enclosed by Monte Sottano, Serra Tremonti and Rupe Cantenna. Along the river and cliffs, you will find natural pools and the Solofrone waterfall.

On the hike between Giungano and Trentinara, the return leg includes the Sentiero degli Sposi. Hikers and walkers can also reach Giungano via the historic Sentiero della Sposa. These different route descriptions offer ideas for a trip where you can take in not just a single viewpoint, but also the transitions between town and landscape.

Churches, Palazzi and Traces of the Past

The town itself also offers tangible points of interest for visitors interested in history. The Cimitero Benedettino at the entrance to the town was built in the 12th century alongside a small church. Various Palaeolithic finds have also been discovered in the Giungano area. The Gola di Tremonti is also associated with an account from antiquity: according to Plutarch, the final act of the so-called Servile War between the rebellious followers of Spartacus and the Roman troops led by Licinius Crassus took place there in 71 BC.

In the 17th century, Palazzo Ducale was the historic seat of local power, where fundamental decisions for the area were made. The 18th-century Palazzo Picilli stands out for its stone portals of considerable art-historical value. Palazzo Aulisio houses an old stone olive mill and a library with texts dating from the 18th century. Palazzo Stromilli, in turn, is a historic residence that has preserved its original architectural features. Two churches complete the picture: the Chiesa della Santa Patrona Maria Assunta dates from 1400, has an onion dome and houses an old statue of the Vergine Pestana. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea, dating from 1300, is considered a medieval architectural structure. Outside the municipality’s built-up area stands the Convento Benedettino, with its surviving perimeter wall and adjoining chapel.

White Fig and Antica Pizza Cilentana

The Festa del Fico Bianco del Cilento celebrates the white fig, which is recognised as a DOP product. At the Festa del Fico Bianco, it is served in a wide variety of sweet and savoury preparations. The focus is therefore not only on the product itself, but also on the many ways it can be used. The Festa del Fico Bianco in Contrada San Giuseppe brings together gastronomy, music, art and Cilentan culture.

Antica Pizza Cilentana is also part of the town’s culinary tradition. Its rustic dough is prepared according to a traditional recipe, baked in wood-fired ovens in historic noble residences and finished with regional ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, wild oregano, tomatoes and local cheese. The 20th edition of the Festa dell’Antica Pizza Cilentana took place from 6 to 11 August 2026 in Giungano’s historic centre. The event put gastronomy, culture, tradition and music at its heart.
