Serramezzana: Palaces, Churches and Townscapes
Accommodation in Serramezzana
Serramezzana combines distinctive architectural forms with a variety of townscapes. At Palazzo Materazzi, two portals and side chapels divide the façade; in the hamlet of San Teodoro, a handful of houses around the parish church create a rustic appearance. The churches and historic centre of Capograssi also lend the area a distinct historical character.
National Park and Townscapes
The municipality of Serramezzana is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, placing it within a larger protected area. The local impressions, however, are very specific: the historic centre of Capograssi is characterised by old stone houses and typical narrow lanes. San Teodoro feels rustic and secluded; only a few houses stand around the parish church. When planning a stay, you can choose between different interests: the lanes and stone houses of a historic centre, or the small-scale settlement of a hamlet.
Palazzo Materazzi: Architectural History in Two Periods
The fortified Palazzo Materazzi was built at the beginning of the 18th century. Its façade is defined by two symmetrical entrance portals and two side chapels. The chapels are dedicated to San Pasquale and Sant’Anna. The symmetrical arrangement of the portals and the two chapels give the façade a clearly articulated appearance.
The interior also preserves a date of its own: the piano nobile has floor tiles from the second half of the 19th century, made by the A. Tajani factory in Vietri. The palazzo thus brings together its early construction period and a later layer of fittings. For anyone interested in architectural history, this is evident in two specific details: the fortified structure dating from the early 18th century and the considerably later tiles.
Churches and Historical Details
The Church of San Nicola has three naves and a square apse spanned by a pointed cross vault. Its description brings together different architectural forms: the division of the church interior into three naves and the square termination with its pointed vault. The church also preserves heavily damaged frescoes that probably date from the 16th century. Their date is therefore a probable, rather than certain, attribution.
In the hamlet of San Teodoro, the church of the same name is the only historic building. Frescoes by the decorative painter Matteo Cilento are located above its semicircular apse. Together with the few houses around the parish church, they create a different townscape from that of Capograssi’s historic centre: here, the single church is the focal point, while stone houses and narrow lanes shape the character of the centre there.
Festivals and Travel Planning
The Festa di San Filippo is a religious celebration held in May. The Festa della Madonna SS. del Rosario is celebrated in August, with processions and festivities in the town centre. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates before booking.
Your interests can guide your choice of a holiday apartment in Serramezzana: if you are mainly interested in architecture, the architectural forms and frescoes take centre stage; if you are interested in different townscapes, Capograssi and San Teodoro offer two distinct points of interest. San Teodoro is on the provincial road from Cosentini to Serramezzana. The nearest railway station for the hamlet is in Agropoli; check current train services before travelling.
