Cetara combines fishing history, sacred art, local festivals and paths through an impressive landscape. Those looking for a holiday apartment here can tailor their stay entirely to their own interests: with visits to museums and churches, a day at the beach, a hike or culinary discoveries centred around Colatura di Alici.

Fishing, Art and Historic Buildings

A good starting point for exploring the town’s history is the Viceroy’s Tower. It combines a cylindrical Angevin tower with a two-storey viceregal structure. The original lower Angevin rooms house the Museum of Fishing and Colatura di Alici. The museum is also intended to include a small library with books, historical documents, newspapers, magazines and photographs relating to Colatura, fishing and Cetara’s roots.

The town museum in Cetara’s tower also focuses on culture. It houses permanent exhibitions by the artist Manfredi Nicoletti, numerous coastal painters known as the “costaioli”, and Ugo Marano’s “Museo vivo”. Corso Garibaldi is Cetara’s main street; among other buildings, the Church of San Pietro Apostolo is located here. The first records of it date back to 988. Its present-day façade is Neoclassical, while the interior is characterised by the late Baroque style.

Further sacred art can be found in the monastery dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, dating from 1585. In the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi, the choir behind the high altar contains a Descent from the Cross by Marco Benincasa, dated 1746. The Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli was most likely consecrated in 1867. At the entrance portal, a ceramic plaque made in 1932 by Ceramica Pinto of Vietri sul Mare commemorates the Madonna of Constantinople.

Colatura di Alici and Festivals Throughout the Year

Colatura di Alici di Cetara is recognised as a product with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. Its importance to the town is also reflected in the Colatura di Alici Festival, held every year in the first half of December. It includes tastings of typical local products in Cetara’s main squares. This provides a specific culinary occasion for a trip in late autumn or winter.

The events calendar also offers religious and unusual local experiences. The festival of the patron saint, Saint Peter the Apostle, is celebrated every year on 29 June. The procession for the Immaculate Conception takes place on 8 December at 5 a.m. The Night of the Lamps is held every year between the end of July and the beginning of August; the date depends on the phases of the moon. On this occasion, it is possible to observe a real anchovy catch off Cetara from the ferries.

Beach and Paths for Different Types of Holiday Days

For a quieter day, Lannio Beach is one option. It is one of Cetara’s three beaches and can be reached on foot from the town centre. Those who prefer to stay on the move can plan the hilly route from Pietra Chiatta to Punta Fuenti. The route takes about an hour and starts at the area beside Cetara’s cemetery. The approximate time is helpful for planning the day, without assessing the route more strongly than the available information allows.

The Lemon Tour also leads through Cetara’s terraces. The stories told by the farmer and fisherman Luigi Di Crescenzo provide insights into the culture of the past. Another path reaches the Santuario dell’Avvocata after a little more than an hour. In addition, a hiking trail follows the historic connection between Cetara and the Badia della SS. Trinità di Cava de’ Tirreni. This allows you to choose between a cultural walk, a hilly route and a longer historic connection.

From Salerno railway station, travellers can take a SITA bus via Vietri to Cetara. When choosing your holiday apartment, it therefore makes sense to first determine the kind of travel rhythm you want: Would you like to explore Corso Garibaldi, museums and churches, focus on Colatura di Alici or plan as many walks and beach days as possible?
