Castel San Giorgio combines its setting at the foot of Monte Castello with a history spanning from an early medieval fortress to an 18th-century villa. Religious art, architectural history, local traditions and a hiking trail offer different perspectives on the town. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would like to focus mainly on discovering its cultural history or include a hike as well.

Religious History and Art

The history of the Santuario di Santa Maria a Castello dates back to the Fossalupara fortress, built between 758 and 786. Around 1200, Abbot Giovanni founded the Eremo di Santa Maria a Castello on the castle ruins. It served Benedictine monks as a place of rest, spiritual retreat and prayer. Thus, the town’s history encompasses both an early fortification and its later religious use.

The sanctuary is also home to a 14th-century fresco of the Madonna delle Grazie, which was rediscovered in 1947. The different dates help distinguish the periods: the fortress dates to 758–786, the hermitage was established around 1200, and the fresco is from the 14th century. If you are travelling with children and are interested in history, this sequence can provide an easy-to-follow thread through the town’s cultural history.

Villa Calvanese and Historic Buildings

Villa Calvanese, a historic palatial villa that belonged to the Calvanese family, stands in Lanzara. It was built in the second half of the 18th century by architect Carmine Calvanese, with the involvement of Luigi Vanvitelli. Its architectural history adds another chapter to the older history of Fossalupara: here the focus is on a villa and the architects involved, not on the fortress or the religious retreat.

The Passo dell’Orco in the hamlet of Trivio is also among Castel San Giorgio’s cultural and historical points of interest. The pass is under archaeological protection because of the remains of a Roman aqueduct found there. The Galleria Borbonica runs through the Passo dell’Orco. These two facts connect different aspects of the town’s history: archaeological remains at a named site and a historic gallery that passes through it.

Landscape and Traditions

The historic centre lies in the upper Sarno Valley at the foot of Monte Castello. Since 22 December 1987, the Collina del Drago in Castel San Giorgio has been designated an area of considerable public interest. These landscape features provide a sense of place, while the buildings and historical remains offer other ways to explore the town’s history.

Local traditions include the Feast of San Biagio in Lanzara. A report from 2023 describes it as an annual event and mentions a traditional procession. Raccontando Lanzara is a recurring cultural event at Villa Calvanese; in 2024, its fifth edition was held there. If you would like to plan a trip around a festival or event, check the specific dates in advance.

Hiking and Choosing Accommodation

The CAI 433 trail passes through the Oasi del Voscone and leads to the Eremo di Santa Maria a Castello in the Castel San Giorgio area. The route, described in March 2026, can combine a hike with a destination linked to the town’s religious history. Trail conditions may vary, so check them before setting out.

The focus of your trip can be a helpful starting point when choosing a holiday rental: those mainly interested in architectural history and art will plan around different themes from those who want to include the CAI 433. This can help tailor your search to the kind of stay you would like in Castel San Giorgio.
