Discover Buccino: Archaeology, Landscape and Historical Layers
Accommodation in Buccino
Buccino is a destination for travellers who want to experience landscape and history as closely interconnected. The town lies on an elongated hill. To the north stretches a broad lake depression, while a series of hill ridges follows to the south. This location gives trip planning a clear direction: the focus is on archaeological traces, historic buildings and a townscape whose past can be traced over many centuries.
Buccino on the Hill
The Walls of Volcei were built in the 4th century BC. Their course follows the topography of the hill and shows how the ancient fortification adapted to the terrain. Those interested in early settlement history will find not a single isolated discovery here, but various traces that together shape Buccino’s historical character.
Archaeology in the Historic Centre
The Archaeological Park is located in today’s historic centre of Buccino. It can be visited via open paths through the listed areas. For planning your day, this means that you can treat the park as a distinct focus of your stay and take in the individual archaeological themes at your own pace. Especially with children, this creates a vivid sequence of questions: How were hills fortified, what were terraces used for, and how did life change in a historic place?
One of the special areas is the sacred site of Santo Stefano. Its necropolis extends across three terraces bordered by retaining structures. The upper terrace was used from the 8th to the 4th century BC. The deceased were given grave goods made first of single-colour and later of two-colour pottery. The chronological development and the different terraces give this site its own historical depth.
From the Terrace to the Rock Settlement
Along Via Egito, an ancient three-level terrace was converted into a rock settlement in the 6th to 7th century AD. The caves successively served as homes with adjoining stables and later as cellars. They remained in use until the 1980 earthquake. This example makes it particularly clear how existing structures can acquire new functions over long periods of time.
Near the enclosure, a chamber tomb with a female burial was created between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Because of its rich grave goods, it is called Tomba degli ori. The name refers to a specific archaeological detail and adds another perspective on burial culture and social differences in antiquity to the visit.
Castle, Mastio and Podium Temple
The Norman-Angevin castle shows continuous use from the 12th to the 20th century AD, as well as several phases of restoration and adaptation. The square tower of the castle, the mastio, was built in the 12th century and is the only surviving evidence of the Norman construction phase.
The still-visible remains of a podium temple are also among the striking historic remains. The building is generally identified as a Caesareum, and thus as a temple dedicated to the imperial cult. The remains are integrated into a modern building used as a private home. The building is thought to date to the middle of the 1st century BC, that is, to 60–50 BC. This classification should be viewed with the corresponding chronological caution.
Carlo Levi at Palazzo Forcella
In addition to its archaeological sites, Buccino offers a cultural perspective through the Museo Carlo Levi della Questione Meridionale. The museum is located in Palazzo Forcella in the historic centre of Buccino and permanently displays Carlo Levi’s paintings under the title “Il segno avvolgente di Carlo Levi: Volti, mito e natura”. This allows a stay initially focused on ancient history to be expanded to include art and an engagement with landscape and human representations.
Choosing Accommodation According to Your Travel Theme
If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Buccino, you can choose your accommodation according to your personal focus. For a culturally oriented stay, the Archaeological Park, the Walls of Volcei, Santo Stefano, Via Egito, the castle and the museum take centre stage. Those travelling more slowly and with different age groups can spread the historical themes across several sightseeing sessions instead of covering all the eras in one day.
