Atrani brings together the sea, historic religious buildings and fascinating stories within a compact setting. Those looking for a holiday apartment as a base for varied days away can combine beach time, culture and scenery here. An old passageway leads directly from the Piazzetta to the beach and the sea – a characteristic access route that connects the town centre directly with the coast.

Beach, sea and access from the Piazzetta

Atrani’s beach consists of sand and fine pebbles. There are both free and managed sections; the beach is also divided into two parts by the Dragone River. For the 2026 bathing season, Atrani’s bathing waters were rated “excellent”. This is based on Resolution No. 42 of the Regional Government of Campania dated 19 February 2026. This information will help you plan the coastal part of your trip more specifically: you can schedule a day at the beach or combine the coastal location with cultural discoveries in the town.

Churches that tell the story of Atrani

The Chiesa di San Salvatore de' Birecto was built in the 10th century. During the time of the Republic of Amalfi, it served as a palace chapel where the dukes were crowned. Its bronze doors, made in 1087, are now kept in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena. This connection alone makes the two churches important stops for anyone interested in the history of the town and the Republic of Amalfi.

The Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente was founded in 1274 on the remains of a medieval fortification. Its two transepts are clearly different: one has vaults clad externally with majolica tiles, while the other has a flat roof. The Collegiata also houses the sculpture “La Madonna pastorella”, dating from 1789. The Santuario Santa Maria del Bando was first mentioned in documentary records in 1187. It lies at the foot of Monte Maggiore, also known as Monte Aureo, in a rocky setting with woodland vegetation and Mediterranean maquis.

Views, walks and unusual stories

The open space on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, known simply as “Stradone” to local residents, offers an especially good view of Atrani. Those who would like to combine a walk with a change of location can include a panoramic route directly from Amalfi to Atrani in their travel plans. Another perspective of the coastal town opens up in the evening, when you can watch the boats set out for lampare fishing.

The Atrani Museo Open Air also adds a distinctive touch. It includes three artist’s benches made of hand-painted lava stone, created by Vietri ceramic artist Franco Raimondi. The local history also includes the cave now known as the Grotta di Masaniello: Masaniello hid there in 1647.

Local flavours and a special feast day

One culinary speciality is Sarchiapone. This traditional festive dish, served during the celebrations in honour of Santa Maria Maddalena, consists of elongated courgettes stuffed with minced meat, fried and covered with tomato sauce. On 22 July, Atrani holds celebrations in honour of Santa Maria Maddalena. Planning your stay around this date gives you a direct insight into the local tradition.

Which type of accommodation suits your travel plans?

A holiday apartment in Atrani is particularly worth considering if you want to combine different interests during one stay: sea and beach, historic churches, a viewpoint, a walk from Amalfi or evening observations along the coast. If the beach is your main focus, you can include the direct access from the Piazzetta and the different beach sections in your daily planning. If you prefer culture, the churches, the cave and the Museo Open Air offer several distinct subjects, without restricting your holiday to a single experience.
