Orria combines the landscape of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park with art, churches and regional specialties. A panoramic road leads over the hills above Orria and the hamlet of Piano Vetrale, offering views of the surrounding landscape. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Orria will find a place where nature experiences, cultural discoveries and culinary interests can be combined.

Landscape between hills and wooded slopes

For active days, hiking trails lead through wooded slopes towards Magliano and Monteforte Cilento. Along the streams in the Orria area, clear water, white or strikingly striped rocks, ferns and wild-flowering plants alternate. These varied landscapes give the trip several possible focal points: you can explore the surroundings along the trails or use the panoramic road to let your gaze wander across the hilly landscape. The Santuario di Santa Domenica stands on the hill above Orria and adds another distinctive feature to the landscape.

Churches, pilgrimage and regional art

Orria and its hamlets offer numerous cultural points of interest. The Galleria Paolo de Matteis in Orria is a tribute to the Baroque painter Paolo de Matteis (1662–1728), who came from Piano Vetrale, a hamlet of the municipality. Piano is also home to the Church of Santa Sofia. According to tradition, it was founded around 1453 by Dionisio Mazza, known as il Greco, a refugee from Constantinople. The church’s bell tower is one of the tallest in Cilento.

Religious history also shapes the townscape. Tempa dell’Arenola became a pilgrimage destination for thousands of believers after the apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by many faithful in 1951. In Vetrale, the Church of S. Elia Profeta recalls an older foundation history: it was founded around the year 1000 by Basilian monks, was originally dedicated to San Biagio, and was only later dedicated to S. Elia under the administration of the Benedictines of the Badia di Cava.

Figs, olive oil and festivals

The White Fig of Cilento is part of the local identity; the “Dottato” variety or cultivar is grown in Orria. At the Ficoscia – Festa del fico, Fico Bianco del Cilento is used fresh, processed and as an ingredient in traditional dishes, including ravioli with ricotta and fig sauce. The olive oil produced in Orria is also regarded as being of high quality. The Pennello D’Oro exhibition, held annually in the last week of July, complements these culinary impressions with figurative art featuring painting, sculpture, photography, an on-site painting competition and murals.

The right base for your trip

When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether nature, churches, art or regional cuisine should be the focus of your days. For a trip with varied interests, Orria offers correspondingly many reasons not to limit your planning to a single attraction. For your journey, it is also helpful to know that, according to the municipality, Omignano Scalo is 11 kilometres away and is one of the nearest railway stations to Orria.
