Las Palmas de Gran Canaria features historic cityscapes, an extensive sandy beach, museums, fortresses, gardens, and distinctive cultural buildings. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Gran Canaria can choose Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a destination.

Cityscape and Coast

Vegueta is the oldest and most characteristic district of the city. Its appearance is shaped by many narrow, cobbled streets and houses in traditional Canarian architecture.

Las Canteras Beach has 3,100 metres of sandy beach and is one of the most important urban beaches in Spain. The La Barra reef runs parallel to more than half of the beach and acts as a natural breakwater.

At one end of Las Canteras Beach are the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus and the Palacio de Congresos de Canarias. Both are considered landmarks of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus is also home to the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra.

Culture and History

Casa de Colón is a museum dedicated to the history of the Canary Islands and their relations with the Americas. Its permanent exhibition covers Columbus's voyages, cartography and navigational instruments, pre-Columbian America, relations between the Canary Islands and the Americas, the history of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from the 15th to the 19th century, and painting from the 15th to the 20th century. The building combines architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Neo-Canarian.

El Museo Canario was founded in 1879 as a scientific and cultural society. The permanent exhibition is devoted exclusively to the indigenous people of Gran Canaria, the Canarios.

Castillo de La Luz is the oldest defensive fortress in the Canary Islands and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1941. Castillo de Mata was built next to the city wall in 1577 as a defensive structure against foreign attackers. Its cultural programme includes exhibitions, lectures, concerts, cinema, and theatre.

Pueblo Canario is an architectural complex consisting of several buildings inspired by traditional Canarian architecture. Every Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., folklore groups perform there on the terrace of the Bodegón.

Mercado de Vegueta is the oldest food market in the Canary Islands. It offers local produce as well as wines and cheese from the Canary Islands.

Nature and Public Spaces

At Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, visitors can walk through laurel forest, thermophilous forest, and Canarian pine forest, as well as explore the succulent garden with 2,000 specimens of succulent plants. The garden covers 27 hectares and showcases the botanical diversity of the Canary Archipelago as well as endemic species from the rest of the Macaronesian region.

Parque Doramas includes the Auditorio José Antonio Ramos amphitheatre, where concerts and other cultural activities take place. The park rises over a mountain to the Altavista viewpoint.

Acuario Poema del Mar at Muelle de Sanapú in the port of Las Palmas presents the marine world of all five continents in three different environments.

Orientation and Connections

Puerto de Las Palmas is connected to 180 ports worldwide by more than 30 regular shipping routes. The Onda Atlántica pedestrian bridge provides access to Acuario Poema del Mar from Mercado del Puerto.

The south tower of Catedral de Santa Ana offers panoramic views of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The south tower can be reached by lift and via a flight of stairs.
