Culture

The Abraham Cárdenes Museum houses a permanent exhibition featuring works by the sculptor Abraham Cárdenes. The museum also has a room for temporary exhibitions, including exhibitions from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria's art circuit. The permanent presentation and changing programme therefore exist side by side in two different exhibition formats.

The Centro Interpretativo de Plantas Medicinales offers an interactive tour through several rooms. It presents various natural remedies and includes a 19th-century Canarian apothecary. Archaeology and landscape

Cuevas del Rey, together with Roque Bentayga and Roque Camello, forms the archaeological complex of the Sierra del Bentayga, which has been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Roque of Cuevas del Rey, Roque Bentayga and Roque Camello also belong to the cultural landscape of Risco Caído y las Montañas Sagradas de Gran Canaria. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2019.

Access to Cuevas del Rey is difficult and involves narrow paths and steps carved into the rock. The archaeological visit is therefore linked to a particularly demanding route; the access conditions mentioned are an integral part of how this site should be understood.

Trails and getting there

The main access roads to Tejeda are the GC-15, GC-21 and GC-60. The destination can therefore be reached via three explicitly named roads, without deriving any further information about distances or journey times.

The official Ruta de Tejeda combines a visit to Cruz de Tejeda, a walk through the historic centre of Tejeda and a visit to the Bentayga Archaeological Park. One variant of stage 2 of the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria includes El Garañón and Pueblo de Tejeda. For planning purposes, a local route and a stage variant can therefore be compared as different trail formats.

Tradition and architecture

The Fiesta del Almendro en Flor was the first pagan festival established as such on Gran Canaria and one of the first in the entire archipelago. In Tejeda, the fiesta is celebrated in February, in the middle of winter, at the same time as the almond trees blossom. The date thus links a specific season with the natural event of the almond blossom.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro can be visited in Tejeda. Overall, Tejeda is an example of the island's typical civil architecture. Stone, wood and roof tiles define the municipality's traditional architecture, including its famous wooden balconies and Mudéjar coffered ceilings. These architectural elements give the local architecture clearly identifiable materials and forms.
