Carrizal – History, Festivals and Water Sports
Culture and History
The historic centre of Carrizal lies around the Iglesia de la Virgen del Buen Suceso. The Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso hermitage in Carrizal dates from 1658.
The Casa del Obispo in Carrizal is a building dating from the late 15th century and now serves as the headquarters and museum of the Fundación Nanino Díaz Cutillas. It provides a permanent exhibition of selected parts of Díaz Cutillas's estate, as well as an annual programme of events. From its headquarters at the Casa del Obispo in Carrizal, the Fundación Canaria Nanino Díaz Cutillas will launch a regular annual programme in 2026.
A replica of the historic Reloj de la Heredad Principal y Mina de El Carrizal was returned to its original location beside the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso. The Reloj is closely associated with traditional agriculture and water distribution, which formed part of everyday life in El Carrizal for generations. The reconstructed emblematic fountain was a landmark, meeting place and symbol of Carrizal's old town for three decades; it originally stood in the Plaza del Buen Suceso. The AFC Guayadeque was founded in 1975 and is considered a cultural reference point in the southeast of Gran Canaria. Its history and development up to the present day are the subject of ongoing discussion.
