Hiking and Trails

From Rincón de Tenteniguada, trails lead towards the Caldera de Los Marteles. The Tajinaste–Pasadera circular route runs from Rincón to the base of the caldera and back to Rincón de Tenteniguada via Pasadera. Another hiking trail also begins there and follows the Tajinaste route towards the caldera. Those who prefer a circular route will find a different course here from the direct route to the caldera.

The Camino de Los Alfaques is 2.9 kilometres long and takes an estimated three hours. Its technical difficulty is low; the meeting point is at Tenteniguada Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Its length, approximate duration and meeting point make this trail easier to plan into the day differently from the two routes connecting to the caldera.

Nature and Landscape

The Roques de Tenteniguada are among the spectacular geological formations and are of great scientific, educational and landscape value. The endemic blue tajinaste grows in the Los Marteles Special Nature Reserve. The striking rock formations and this specifically named plant therefore represent different natural features of the area.

The Tenteniguada palm grove lies at an altitude of approximately 700 metres and, together with wild olive, eucalyptus and almond trees, forms small wooded clusters. From the upper section of the trail to the Caldera de Los Marteles, views open out over the northwest of Gran Canaria and the mountain system surrounding the Caldera de Tenteniguada. The altitude, vegetation and views shape different facets of the landscape.

Culture and Local Specialities

The Callejones del Cuerno are a place to stroll in Tenteniguada, where visitors can admire houses featuring traditional Canarian architecture. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the traditional Canarian style. Both places display architectural elements that form part of Tenteniguada’s cultural character.

A historic royal road was used for livestock transhumance and connected the highlands with the Caldera de Tenteniguada and the Caldera de Los Marteles. Its history is therefore linked to the aforementioned landscapes and trails. At the same time, the road preserves the memory of earlier movement between the highlands and the calderas.

The Día del Turista in Tenteniguada is part of the Ruta del Almendrero en Flor and has been held since 2012. At the Día del Turista 2025, visitors could sample potaje de berros, roast pork, garbanzada, carnival tortillas and bread with chorizo. In addition to its longstanding tradition, the food gives the festival a clear local connection.
