Culture and Village Scenery

The Caserío de Temisas forms a compact group of buildings integrated into the landscape and is an example of traditional Canarian architecture, with rectangular houses, load-bearing walls and pitched roofs. It holds the title of “Caserío Canario Representativo”, awarded by the Government of the Canary Islands.

The Ermita de San Miguel in Temisas was built in 1730. In nearby Agüimes, Cuevas y Graneros de la Audiencia is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Archaeological Zone.

The nearby archaeological complex of Cuevas y Graneros de la Audiencia comprises natural and artificial caves used as living spaces, cave areas used as burial sites, and spaces for domestic storage. On Gran Canaria, it includes some of the few examples of artificial caves used as burial sites.

Festivals and Olives

The festivals of Temisas in honour of San Miguel Arcángel take place from 10 to 29 September and include musical, sporting, cultural and traditional events, including a Romería.

A festival day included a Diana Floreada, a livestock fair, a communal lunch, a procession of the patron saint and an evening dance.

From September onwards, the municipal olive mill in Agüimes produces the Caserío de Temisas extra virgin olive oil every year for local olive growers. Only olives from farmers residing in the municipality of Agüimes or from trees within the municipal area are used. Temisas is also home to an olive grove considered the largest in the archipelago.

Caserío de Temisas olive oil is available for retail purchase at the Museo de Historia de Agüimes, the Centro de Interpretación del Casco Histórico and the Museo de Guayadeque.

At nearby Risco Pintado, also known as La Audiencia, there is a circular walking route of approximately 1 kilometre that takes around 90 minutes and has a moderate difficulty level.

Another circular hike is titled “Guayadeque – Temisas – Cuevas de La Audiencia – Barranco de Barafonso – Guayadeque”.

The circular hike via Temisas is classified as “Experts only” on one section and has a total elevation gain of 1,281 metres, as well as long, continuous climbs.

It begins and ends at the museum car park in the Barranco de Guayadeque. The route is considered a trail with spectacular panoramic views away from major urban centres.
