Holiday apartment in Trasmontaña – Waterways, estate history and banana cultivation

The Cantoneras y Lavaderos complex is located on the Camino del Laurel in Trasmontaña. Two structures are visible on the descent; further ones follow the irrigation channel running there. The complex comprises five stone cantoneras and four small, individually constructed stone lavaderos for washing while kneeling. Three cantoneras are elongated, one is approximately square, and the fifth is located in a rectangular hut.

The Acequia del Guincho carried water from the Heredad and later from the Porrón; several washing places were established along the channel. Around 1572, the Acequia Alta was extended to Trasmontaña as a section of the Acequia de Arucas in order to convey water to the El Prior estate, which belonged to the mayorazgo.

History

The historic estates and manor houses in Trasmontaña include complexes dating from the 17th and 18th centuries along the old royal road. Traditional estate complexes included residential and farm buildings, stables and storage buildings in L- or U-shaped layouts enclosed by walls.

Mundo del Plátano at Hacienda La Rekompensa offers a guided tour of a banana plantation, with explanations of the history, cultivation and varieties of Canarian bananas, as well as a tasting of products made from Canarian bananas.
