Puerto de las Nieves: Coast, Culture and Diving Sites

Puerto de las Nieves is characterized by impressive cliffs rising from the sea to the Pinar de Tamadaba. One of the striking natural landmarks is the Dedo de Dios, also known as Roque Partido: a rock formation separated from the rest of the rock massif and the most characteristic sight of Puerto de las Nieves.

Coast and Landscape

Playa de Las Nieves is a pebble beach in front of the current jetty, with calm water, and is known for its crystal-clear water. It is considered easily accessible and is regarded as a place for swimming and water sports. Las Salinas has three natural pools connected by tunnels. The pools can be reached on foot from Avenida Paseo de los Poetas.

Water and Trails

Water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, diving and sailing can be enjoyed in Puerto de las Nieves. The pools of Las Salinas allow divers to observe the local marine flora and fauna. Las Merinas is a diving site with rocks rising to the surface, a few metres from the beach and close to the natural monument “Dedo de Dios”; interconnected passages and short canyons characterize the dive.

The GR® 131 hiking trail is also part of the area’s landscape orientation. It has been officially approved as the Puerto de Las Nieves – Pico de Las Nieves – Playa del Burrero route.

Culture and Festivals

The Ermita de las Nieves was built in the second half of the 16th century at the behest of Antón Cerezo. The chapel houses a 16th-century Flemish triptych called “Tríptico de Ntra. Sra. de las Nieves”.

The Fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves were declared to be of national tourist interest in 1972. The town’s main festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is celebrated on 5 August; the statue is located in the chapel in Puerto de las Nieves. The Bajada de la Rama takes place on 4 August. During this event, dancers carry branches while dancing to the sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves.

The Museo de la Rama introduces visitors to the history, traditions and music of the Fiesta de la Rama, displays images of the celebration and presents typical elements such as the Papagüevos. The Paseo de los Poetas also runs through Puerto de las Nieves and is dedicated to the modernist writers Alonso Quesada, Tomás Morales and Saulo Torón.
