Discover Agaete – Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartment

On the northwest coast of Gran Canaria near Agaete, sharp volcanic rocks plunge into the Atlantic and form spectacular cliffs; barrancos continue into the interior of the island. In Agaete, hiking trails lead through diverse landscapes, including the valley, the mountainous landscapes of Tamadaba and the coast.

Landscape

Tamadaba Nature Park is one of the two nature parks of Gran Canaria. In the upper Tamadaba massif, a dense forest of Canary Island pines (Pinus canariensis) grows at an altitude of more than approximately 1,000 metres. The Barranco de Guayedra is protected as a natural area because of its geological, natural and scenic features and is home to numerous endemic plant and animal species.

Different types of landscape therefore meet in Agaete: the coast with its cliffs, the barranco terrain extending into the interior of the island, the valley and the mountainous landscapes of Tamadaba. The protected natural area of Guayedra complements the Tamadaba forest with geological features as well as a species-rich flora and fauna.

Culture and History

The Fiesta de la Rama de Agaete takes place annually on 3 and 4 August as part of the celebrations for the Virgen de las Nieves. During the Fiesta de la Rama, participants carry branches through Agaete and proceed in a music-accompanied procession with Papagüevos.

The Maipés Archaeological Park comprises almost 700 indigenous graves. Maipés combines archaeological value with volcanic geology, the associated flora and fauna, and a location below the rock faces of Tamadaba. Casa Fuerte was built as a fortress on indigenous foundations around August or September 1481.

Huerto de las Flores was created in the 19th century as a tropical garden with more than 100 acclimatised species from around the world, particularly from America. For a time, the garden served as a place for extended walks and meditation for important poets and writers of the island, such as Saulo Torón, Tomás Morales and Alonso Quesada. Bodega Los Berrazales offers guided tours presenting the winemaking process as well as orange and coffee cultivation at the La Laja estate.

Getting There and Holiday Apartment

Agaete can be reached from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria via the GC-2 road. From La Aldea de San Nicolás or from the south of Gran Canaria, the western coastal road GC-200 leads to Agaete; the journey is possible by private car or regular bus services.
