El Risco: Coast, Charco Azul and Archaeological Heritage

El Risco is one of the three main basins of Agaete. Two unique endemic species occur in the El Risco area: Dendriodotserum Merendozii and Centaurea Arbutifolia. This combination of landscape and special species alone gives the place a clear natural-history profile.

Nature and Coast

Playa del Risco is located in the vicinity of El Risco. It consists of sand, gravel and stones and is an open beach with strong waves. The focus here is therefore not a uniform stretch of coast, but a beach landscape with varying proportions of rock and sand and visibly active water.

At Charco Azul, the water that rises in the Tirma and Tamadaba mountains gathers before continuing on to the Atlantic. The walk to Charco Azul is three kilometres long and short; the path begins behind the El Risco neighbourhood. For personal trip planning, the coast, watercourse and route length can be considered as different natural themes alongside one another. The impressions are clearly distinct: at Playa del Risco, the ground and waves shape the landscape, while at Charco Azul, the course of the water from the mountains to the Atlantic and the route itself take centre stage. The two endemic species also add a special connection to the area's plant life to this natural-history perspective.
