In the historic town centre of Firgas, the Paseo de Gran Canaria is a pedestrian street. The paseo features a 30-metre-long stone cascade. Culture and History

The Casa de la Cultura was built in 1870 as a hotel or inn for visitors to the Azuaje spas. Today, it houses the municipal library, an exhibition room and an event hall. The Iglesia de San Roque was opened as an independent parish on 19 January 1845 and stands on the ruins of the first San Juan Ortega chapel, dating from 1502.

At the Plaza de San Roque, the restored Antigua Acequia Real features stone washing places with sculptures of women doing laundry. El Molino de Agua was built in 1517 to supply Firgas’s early population with flour; in 2007, it was protected as a cultural asset in the ethnological site category. The Molino de Firgas, also known as Molino del Conde, has been restored for visitors.

The Museo Canario del Agua Villa de Firgas is a museum and interpretation centre in Firgas. The Molino de Cha Margarita was built in 1870 and was the first mill of the Villa de Firgas. The Molino de El Roque was built in 1855 and has been out of operation since 1970. The Molino de Guadalupe survives as a ruin and was the only mill in this area that did not use water from the Heredad de Arucas y Firgas.

Nature and Landscape

The Azuaje Special Nature Reserve covers 61.1 hectares and has no resident population. It preserves one of the few remaining laurel forest remnants on Gran Canaria, as well as several endemic species. In the Barranco de Guadalupe area, there are reed beds, ponds, frogs and willows.

Las Berreras in the municipality of Firgas is a rural landscape of exceptional value. The old berreras in the nearby small ravines combine water management with cultivated terraces. In Las Berreras, in the San Antón district, watercress grows on water-rich terraces.

The Mirador de Las Madres is 300 metres from Firgas’s historic town centre and offers views of the confluence of the Las Madres, Guadalupe and Aguaje ravines. The Parque del Ganadero offers panoramic views of Gran Canaria’s north coast.

Trails and Festivals

The Barranco de Las Madres y Guadalupe area has numerous trails through a vegetation-rich landscape that are suitable for hiking. Firgas has six permanently established, signposted circular hiking routes, distinguished by colour. Firgas’s main San Roque festival takes place on 16 August and includes a romería, a livestock fair and the traditional Bajada del Palo.
