Melenara in Gran Canaria – Coast, Culture and Water

Playa de Melenara is 350 metres long and has black sand. It has held the Blue Flag continuously throughout the year since 2000.

Culture

Neptune stands near the small pier at Playa de Melenara. The 4.20-metre-high bronze statue was created by Luis Arencibia Betancor and inaugurated on 1 September 2001. Thus, alongside the beach, a striking work of art is also part of the local landscape.

Water

The Taliarte–Melenara–Salinetas swimming channel provides a safe area for open-water swimming training all year round. Melenara is part of the buoy-marked open-water swimming channel between Salinetas and the Charca de Taliarte. The channel is approximately 1,000 metres long. The swimmers’ guidance line is located 100 metres from the coast and 50 metres from the navigation zone.

The Coreano shipwreck lies in Melenara Bay. It can only be reached by boat and lies at a depth of 30 metres. Half of the hull is covered with gorgonians. The wreck complements the marked swimming channel with a clearly separate underwater site.

On the Move

The Ruta por la costa begins at Playa de La Garita, ends at Playa de Salinetas and passes through Melenara. It takes approximately two hours. Along the route, participants learn about coastal geomorphology and the tides and discover the biodiversity of the intertidal zone. The route connects several coastal points with natural-history content within a manageable time frame.

Water and the coast appear here in different forms: the swimming channel is designed for open-water swimming training, while the Ruta por la costa focuses on landforms, tides and the lively intertidal zone. This makes it possible to consider the sporting and natural-history aspects separately.

At the Beach

Supervised bathing is available in Melenara all year round, with amphibious chairs, crutches, walking aids and therapeutic swimming aids. The Merendero de Melenara has six tables, two of which have been adapted for people with reduced mobility. The beach surroundings therefore include both facilities in the water and a specifically designated area for staying on land.

Biblioplaya de Melenara offers free book lending, daily newspapers, internet access and reading areas. It also provides cultural activities especially for children and families. As a recurring cultural summer venue, the Biblioplaya has a programme for families and children. The various areas therefore range from reading and internet access to the seasonal cultural activities that return each year.
