Vicenza combines Palladio’s architecture with sacred history, museums, historic parks and its own culinary tradition. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with 23 buildings constructed by Andrea Palladio. One particularly defining building is the Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza’s landmark. Its Serlian loggias, designed by Andrea Palladio, surround the medieval Palazzo della Ragione. On the terrace of the Basilica Palladiana, there is a monumental viewing platform in the heart of Vicenza. From there, the 360-degree view extends over Vicenza’s historic old town and the Berici Hills. Culture and history

The Teatro Olimpico is the world’s first covered theatre made of masonry. Andrea Palladio built it between 1580 and 1585; it was inaugurated upon completion. Theatre and music productions take place at the Teatro Olimpico. The Palladio Museum presents original Palladio drawings together with models and videos. The museum’s Silk Room is dedicated to silk production and Vicenza’s international silk trade. The Palladio Museum can be reached by taking the Venice–Milan railway line to Vicenza railway station, followed by a ten-minute walk.

Palazzo Chiericati was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1550 for Girolamo Chiericati. In this building, the City Museum in Palazzo Chiericati preserves and displays more than 35,000 works from the 13th to the 20th century, including paintings, sculptures, graphic works and applied art. The City Museum is accessible to people with disabilities. The Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza focuses on a different historical theme: it collects memories of events and figures from Italian history connected with the historical events of Vicenza. The museum is located in Villa Guiccioli on Colle Ambellicopoli, where the people of Vicenza resisted in 1848 to defend the city. This museum is also accessible to people with disabilities.

In the crypt of the Church of Santa Corona lies the Valmarana Chapel, which Andrea Palladio designed for Antonio Valmarana in 1576. A visit to Villa Valmarana ai Nani includes its frescoes, historic buildings and new park.

Sacred sites

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico was established following apparitions of the Virgin Mary on 7 March 1426 and 1 August 1428 on the hill south of Vicenza. In 1578, Andrea Palladio expanded the sanctuary with a large square nave. From Vicenza’s historic centre, Santa Maria di Monte Berico can be reached on foot via Viale X Giugno or via the 192-step Scalette di Monte Berico.

The sanctuary includes the Museum of Sacred Art in Monte Berico. It displays more than 500 artefacts from the 14th to the 21st century and includes Greek, Russian, Neo-Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons.

Parks and local tradition

There are also historic green spaces within Vicenza. Campo Marzo is one of the city’s historic parks, as are the Giardini Salvi. In Parco Querini, a tree-lined avenue leads to a small temple surrounded by greenery.
