Historic sites with their own character

Eremo di San Cassiano is a 17th-century building incorporating a church approximately one thousand years older. Hewn graves are still visible in the cliffs. The hermitage can only be reached on foot via a trail that runs along the cliffs of Lumignano.

Villa Eolia was built in the second half of the 16th century by Count Francesco Trento as a pavilion and seat of the Accademia Eolica. Palladio depicted the villa in the second book of the „Quattro libri dell’architettura“ from 1570. One of its distinctive architectural features is a precious openwork octagonal stone grille. Through it, tempered air from the mountain caves can rise via underground passages.

The Benedictine parish church of Pieve di San Mauro Abate stands on a rocky spur and is one of the oldest religious foundations in the Vicenza area. The selection of historic destinations therefore ranges from a rock church and a Renaissance villa to a parish foundation with a long tradition.

Caves and climbing cliffs near Lumignano

The Covoli dei Berici are natural caves in the limestone cliffs behind Lumignano. These rock openings were used from the Early and Middle Palaeolithic through to the second half of the 20th century. They served as settlements, fortified refuges, hermitages and shelters for domestic animals.

The climbing cliffs of Lumignano also have a long connection with mountaineering. As early as 1920, mountaineers used them to prepare for ascents in the Dolomites; today they are internationally regarded as a reference for sport climbing. Thirty new routes are designated for adults and 15 new routes for children. At Dente di Lumignano, climbing is prohibited on 21 routes on the south side and 32 routes on the west side. The affected area lies to the left of the „CLASSICA“.

Trails, nature project and local speciality

The Sentiero del Monte Brosimo begins and ends at Piazza da Schio in Costozza. This fixed starting and finishing point gives your planning a clear geographical reference, while access to Eremo is exclusively on foot via the trail along the cliffs of Lumignano.

Today, the area of the former Ex Cava Volto di Costozza quarry offers events and guided visits. At the same time, it serves as an experimental project for restoring natural habitats and enhancing them for educational and ecological purposes. Nature and human use are part of an explicitly interconnected process of development here.

The „Bisi di Lumignano“ are part of the local character. Since 2008, the municipality of Longare has recognised them as a typical local product under its DECO scheme. The heat stored by the surrounding cliffs enables these peas to be produced exceptionally early.
