Historical Traces in Cassola

The first written record of Cassola is a deed of gift issued on 29 April 1085, in which a castle and a chapel are mentioned. Following this donation, a watchtower-like structure was built in the Cassola countryside, resembling a castle and containing a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist.

San Marco Church and Jacopo dal Ponte

The present-day San Marco Church in Cassola was built from the ground up between 1746 and 1766. Inside is Jacopo dal Ponte's altarpiece depicting Saint Mark in Glory between Saints John the Evangelist and Bartholomew; it was installed there on 21 December 1573. The classically designed façade has a central entrance portal and an inscription recording the chronology of its construction.

San Zeno: Construction History, Frescoes and Restoration

The Church of San Zeno in Cassola also reaches far back into the town's history. A rector is documented there on 1 October 1427. The first construction phase of the present church began on 6 February 1746; it was consecrated on 29 June 1847.

Its neoclassical façade has four pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The nave's vault is decorated with frescoes depicting the Glory of Saint Zeno and the Assumption of Mary. San Zeno underwent extensive restoration from 2014 to 2017 after numerous cracks were found in the vault; the existing decorations were also restored. The sacristy was located in the original small church and was to be preserved as evidence of the original wall structure.

Festivals and White Asparagus

Local traditions include the Festa dei Fiori in San Giuseppe di Cassola, a traditional market event for horticulture and the maintenance of green spaces. It traditionally takes place on the Sunday before 19 March. In 2025, it was a traditional event that had been held there for 39 years. In San Zeno, Cassola, the Festa dell'asparago is one of the events centred around white asparagus.
