Pianezze: Cherry Route, Churches and Villas

Pianezze lies along the foothills of the Asiago Plateau. The municipal area extends partly across hilly terrain and partly across flat land. Churches, Frescoes and Historic Buildings

The parish church of San Lorenzo was completely rebuilt between 1753 and 1754. It contains a cycle of frescoes by the painter Giuseppe Graziani (1699–1760), who came from Padua. The church of San Nicolò was restored in 1981 by the Alpini association of Pianezze. It also contains a fresco by an unknown artist depicting the Madonna and Child, as well as possibly the House of Nazareth or the church of San Nicolò; below them are Saints Nicholas and Oswald.

The Oratorio dei SS. Filippo e Giacomo was first mentioned in 1262 and preserves a fragment of a fresco of the Virgin and Child dating from the second half of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. The Oratorio di San Leonardo contains an oil painting by an unknown artist from around 1700 depicting Saint Leonard. Villa Maroso is a square 16th-century building; in the piano nobile, columns have been preserved that once supported the architrave of a loggia that was later closed.

The courtyard of Villa Maroso contains an original fountain with a brick-built terracotta surround and original hydraulic-mechanical mechanisms. Casa Rigo has a central tower structure that formerly served as a dovecote, along with two lateral wings and a cornice decorated with terracotta.

Pianezze is a stop on the “Strada della Ciliegia”. During the cherry blossom season in April, the gentle hills along the Cherry Route become a natural spectacle. In Pianezze, IGP cherries, grapevines and olives are cultivated as highly specialised crops. From mid-May onwards, cherries are presented at numerous stalls along the roads and at traditional festivals. The name of the Colceresa itinerary also honours the cherry as a typical local product.

The Sentiero dei Ciliegi leads from Pianezze to Marostica, and you can then walk back to Pianezze. From the northern end of Contrada Malossi, the trail runs through coppice woodland; along the way, you may be accompanied by the sound of the stream below. In 1996, a project was drawn up in Pianezze to create an educational trail along the town’s old paths. The initiative made it possible to restore old connecting paths.
