Museum and History in Foza

The Museo Etnografico della Comunità di Foza is housed in the former town hall and is also known as “la casa del santo”. The building represents the reconstruction of Foza after the severe destruction of the First World War. Since August 2013, the museum has housed a section dedicated to the Foza sheep. Photographs, documents, objects and memories convey the history of sheep farming, which sustained the economy of Foza and the entire plateau for centuries.

The parish church of Foza is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and was inaugurated on 12 August 1926. Its Romanesque bell tower was completed in 1927 and is 34 metres high. The parish church houses the Pala dell’Assunta, a painting created by Francesco Da Ponte il Vecchio in 1519. It is the only painting in the parish to have survived the destruction of the First World War.

Sacred Places and Lasting Memories

The Chiesa di S. Antonio in Foza was built immediately after the Second World War. The Chiesetta di S. Rocco was built in 1870, bombed during the war and subsequently rebuilt. Along the path leading to Foza’s Monumento ai Caduti memorial, trees bear plaques with the names of local soldiers who fell in the First World War. Further plaques bearing the names of soldiers who fell in the Second World War were placed on the outer wall. Foza’s historic Quinquennali festivals originated in 1837 as an expression of thanks to the Madonna.

Views over the Plain and Special Experiences

The promontory on which the Chiesetta di San Francesco stands offers views across the Venetian plain as far as the Venetian Lagoon. The chapel is considered the oldest hermitage on the Asiago Plateau and, for centuries, its only hermitage. Inaugurated in 1990, the Ponte Valgadena connects Foza and Enego across the valley of the same name; bungee jumps from approximately 175 metres are possible there.

The surrounding area of Foza includes Mount Col d’Astiago, Mount Monte Forcellona and Mount Col del Gallo; the Cave di Rubbio cave is also located there. The wider regional surroundings of Foza include the Parco del Sojo Arte e Natura as a museum. The Museo dell’Automobile “Bonfanti-VIMAR” and Castello degli Ezzelini castle are also located there.
