Birkenfeld offers a variety of discoveries: nature trails exploring themes ranging from aquatic life to arnica meadows, cycling routes with their own itineraries, and a state museum offering insights into local and regional history. Part of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay, then choose a suitable location as your base.

National park, bogs and arnica meadows

In the wider destination of Rhineland-Palatinate, the natural landscape of the Birkenfeld region features slope bogs, ancient beech trees growing on rocky scree slopes, and extensive forests in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland jointly established the national park in 2015. The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier focuses on a distinctive landscape feature: information boards explain the rare and threatened arnica meadows, how they formed and are preserved, and the area’s biodiversity. The Ochsenbruch between Börfink and the Erbeskopf is a species-rich bog that gave the Börfink Oxen Tour its name.

Nature trails and their different themes

The Upper Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach focuses on the diversity of aquatic life. The trail is one kilometre long and has four access points. Its themes range from aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, including barbel and gudgeon, to waterbirds such as the kingfisher and dipper. It also introduces dragonfly species, including the common damselfly and river clubtail. The trail therefore has a different focus from the route to the arnica meadows: here, the emphasis is on wildlife in and around the water and its diversity.

The “In the Land of Kites, Storks and Co.” nature trail has 18 stations around Niederhambach, Schmißberg and Rimsberg. At Schmißberg, the attractions include an aviary with the stork pair Lotte and Bernie, as well as information about the habitats of red kites, black storks and other species. A very different kind of discovery awaits on the 2.5-kilometre Avenue of the Gods between the local municipalities of Schwollen and Leisel, where ten colourful, life-size figures of gods are displayed. The trails differ not only in length but, above all, in what they draw your attention to—habitats, species or art in the landscape.

Cycling with Birkenfeld as your reference point

The RadLust Water Dreams Loop starts in Birkenfeld and continues through Brücken and Abentheuer. Along the way, it passes a historic ironworks, then follows the edge of the national park along the old ore route towards the Saarland border. The Nahe Cycle Route stage offers a different route: it passes the Environmental Campus in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach before continuing to Birkenfeld. For this stage in Birkenfeld, the route recommends a visit to the state museum. The two cycling routes therefore differ in their itineraries and named stops, giving you specific reference points if cycling is to be a focus of your trip.

State museum and traces of history

The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs; ironworks in the Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg period. The topics range from early cultures to regional industry and local history. Another historical trace lies along the B 269 at the exit for Oberhambach: there was once a spa house at the Sauerbrunnen springs and the Petersquelle spring. Princes and kings from across Europe came to the Hunsrück to relax.

Choosing the right focus for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, it’s worth weighing the places and experiences mentioned above against your own travel plans. If you want Birkenfeld, with its state museum and cycling stage, to be the focus, these destinations offer a different point of reference from the nature attractions around Börfink, Thranenweier or Hoppstädten-Weiersbach. Schwollen and Leisel also represent a distinct focus, with the Avenue of the Gods. First decide which stops matter to you, then compare the locations of holiday apartments with the places you plan to visit.
