Bundenbach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bundenbach is a historic center of slate mining in the Hunsrück region: from the early Middle Ages until the 1960s, mining was carried out in 32 pits. Culture

Altburg is an open-air museum with reconstructed houses on the site of a Celtic hill fort that was used from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. Altburg can only be visited as part of a guided tour; the tours begin 400 meters away at the Herrenberg Visitor Mine or the Hunsrück Fossil Museum.

The Herrenberg Visitor Mine is currently closed until further notice. Together with the adjoining Fossil Museum, it presents the history of slate mining and fossils from the area, which are approximately 400 million years old. The medieval ruins of Schmidtburg Castle are located in the Hahnenbach Valley within the boundaries of neighboring Schneppenbach in the Rhein-Hunsrück district.

Hiking

The Hahnenbach Valley Tour is a premium hiking trail in the Hahnenbach Valley near Bundenbach, Woppenroth, and Schneppenbach. It crosses the Hunsrück cultural landscape and passes the Fossil Museum, the Herrenberg Visitor Mine, and the reconstructed Altburg settlement. In 2012, the Hahnenbach Valley Tour received the award for “Germany’s Most Beautiful Hiking Trail.” Its starting point is approximately one kilometer or 15 minutes on foot from the nearby trailhead.

Activities

The Herrenberg Visitor Mine offers a slate-splitting activity during which visitors can purchase a piece of slate and borrow a hammer and chisel. The activity is suitable for children of primary school age and older.
