Herrstein: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Herrstein is located in the Nahe-Hunsrück region and preserves a largely intact medieval town. The historic town center features numerous restored half-timbered houses dating from 1600 to 1800.

Culture and History

The local heritage museum is housed in a schoolhouse built in 1848/49. The exhibition on the ground floor covers the geology as well as the prehistoric and early historical periods in the Herrstein area. The museum also includes a fully functional former communal bakery, known locally as a Backes. Traditional original Hunsrück farmers’ bread made with sourdough is produced in Herrstein’s former bakery.

Herrstein was first mentioned in a document on April 9, 1279. In 1428, Herrstein was granted town privileges by the Count of Sponheim. A discovery tour through the town includes the clock tower, the castle, the church, the town wall with moat, the bell tower and Schinderhannes Tower, as well as the covered defensive walkway.

Nature and Trails

The Medieval Trail begins in the medieval town center; Herrstein is also the starting and finishing point of the approximately 8.5-kilometer route. The trail predominantly follows paths with natural surfaces, with 72 percent running over natural ground. Its features include waterways, forest edges, rock formations, and viewpoints.

The Hunsrück has extensive forests and more than 1,000 kilometers of signposted hiking trails.
