History and Cultural Heritage

The Jammereiche is a listed monument in Breitenthal and also a natural monument near Breitenthal. A local legend associates it with soldiers who set fire to the forest during the Thirty Years’ War; at the same time, the Jammereiche is connected with an event during that war.

Slate mining is also visible in the village. Old slate heaps and slate tunnels from mining operations that continued until the end of 1959 have been preserved in Breitenthal. Breitenthal slate was known for its high quality and was used in house construction. Bats now live in the former slate tunnels.

Landscape and Nature

Breitenthal lies on the edge of the Hunsrück at approximately 400 metres above sea level; the broad valley location shapes the landscape of Breitenthal. The former slate tunnels also provide a habitat for bats that live there today.

Hiking

The Medieval Trail runs near Breitenthal. The route is approximately 8.5 kilometres long and has 72 percent natural surface. Its natural sections include ascents and descents. The Medieval Trail is characterised by waterways, forest edges, rocks and viewpoints. Guided hikes are regularly offered on the Medieval Trail.

Cycling

The Panorama Tour on the Sonnenplateau passes through Breitenthal. It partly follows the Nahe-Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route and connects with the Nahe Cycle Route at Fischbach. The Panorama Tour on the Sonnenplateau is suitable for e-bikes.
