Sonnschied is situated on a hill south of the Hahnenbach at an elevation of around 400 metres and offers views ranging from west to southeast. To the north of the village, beyond the Hahnenbach, the Lützelsoon begins and continues into the Soonwald. Together, the Lützelsoon and Soonwald form one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Nature
Anyone walking in different directions from Sonnschied passes through forests, fields and open countryside. A path over a wooded hill near the village opens up further views to the south.
Hiking
The 14th stage of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs from Herrstein via Sonnschied to the Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle near Bundenbach. The Kirn–Bundenbach stage of the Soonwaldsteig is approximately 10 kilometres long and takes around five hours. From Idar-Oberstein and Fischbach-Weierbach, the route can be reached via bus connections to Herrstein; the return connection from the Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle is via Kirn railway station.
North of Sonnschied, the Soonwaldsteig reaches a quiet section of the Hahnenbach valley near Rudolfshaus that is not served by a single road. The path to the Herrenberg visitor mine near Bundenbach passes mining relics, including a narrow-gauge railway, a tunnel and spoil heaps. The Herrenberg visitor mine near Bundenbach is a slate mine.
Hellkirch is described as a medieval church ruin and can be reached from Sonnschied via a signposted hiking trail. Schmidtburg is also described as a large castle complex and can be accessed from the village via a signposted hiking trail. An authentically reconstructed Celtic settlement is among the destinations linked to Sonnschied by signposted hiking routes.
Cycling
On its route from Berschweiler near Kirn via Herrstein to Fischbach, the Panoramatour cycling route across the Sonnenplateau passes through Sonnschied. Due to its varied topography, it is described as particularly suitable for e-bikes or sporty cyclists. The tour is described as being 39.2 kilometres long and can be cycled in either direction or shortened.
Culture
The village church of Sonnschied is a Protestant church dating from 1729 and continues to be used regularly for Protestant services. The Quereinhaus at Hauptstraße 8 is partly built as a half-timbered structure, dates from 1868 and is described as characterising the appearance of the village.
