Sonnenberg-Winnenberg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Hiking
The 41-kilometre Nahesteig is a premium long-distance hiking trail between Nohfelden and Idar-Oberstein through the Birkenfeld district. Its route passes through Sonnenberg-Winnenberg: a forest path leads through the Eiserne Lay towards Sonnenberg-Winnenberg, and above Sonnenberg the trail continues towards Winnenberg. Near the Nahe, the Nahesteig meets the Gräfin Loretta dream trail.
Sonnenberg-Winnenberg is also connected by a local circular trail measuring 3.5 kilometres. It includes 130 metres of elevation gain and loss; its estimated duration is given as approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Gasthaus Sonnenberg is about 500 metres from the Nahesteig.
Landscape
The Nahesteig alternates between riverside, forest and rocky sections and offers views of the Nahe valley. One route followed the Nahe, passed a copper adit and climbed via a short scrambling section to the town centre. Another hike led through the Teufelsgraben to Winnenberg and then to the entrance to Sonnenberg.
On 5 October 2024, a hike led from Schachergraben to Weibersprung and included a view of Klausfelsen.
History
The Eiserne Lay is associated with former mining.
Trail character
The Nahesteig is moderately difficult in some sections and challenging in others. A section near Weibersprung required sturdy footwear and sure-footedness.
A return from Sonnenberg can be made by bus 820 to Idar-Oberstein, followed by a change to RB 34. A walk to Sonnenberg is described as approximately 2 kilometres.
